The Mask of Death

Here’s a wonderfully illustrated vampire story by Jerry Grandenetti. I’d love to see more of his pre-code horror output for Standard, but according to the story bio in my reprint he only did “a half dozen or so strips” before he went on to Fiction House and created The Secret Files of Dr. Drew strip which, by the way, is also a lot of fun.

Originally presented in the April 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #8

Grandenetti is an underrated guy, he did a ton of great work in not only the golden era but also the silver.

AWESOME ART! LOVE THE BROKEN GLASS PANELS ON PAGE 5, VERY DYNAMIC AND POLISHED

I FOLLOWED THE LINK BACK TO HIS WEBSITE AND THE STUFF ON THERE LOOKS TOTALLY DIFFERENT THOUGH...GUESS YOU LOSE SOME POLISH AS YOU GET OLDER

I first became aware of his name and distinct style in the Warren horror mags, and then his later work for DC.

Excellent art, maybe it was the coloring, but the whole story seemed really modern to me,very bronze-agish,loved it.story-wise,however it wasn't too great, what was the "mask of death"?,the drapes or the vampires's doctor identity?,and i don't really think a fall can kill a vampire(hey, maybe the splash panel is the sequel!)still,an impressive work.

It does have a very modern feel, and it is probably because of the re-coloring job by Ron Courtney in my SOTI #6 reprint from '86.
