The Planet of Living Death

Another one from the September 1953 issue of Menace #7, and this time Stan teamed up terrifically with Russ Heath for a sci-fi shocker to shiver your spines from beyond the screaming stars! How great is the design of those aliens? I totally love the first panel on the last page... it's like Collin's having a chit chat with the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

And wow-- that's another FULL ISSUE presentation here at THOIA as well! Check the archive for The Witch in the Woods, Your Name is Frankenstein (my fave!), and of course our previous post, Fresh Out of Flesh! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone too, and be sure to give a big thankful salute to Stan today for all of these wonderful, timeless treasures that he gave us... not a turkey in the bunch!

This one is fun. The Osirusians are awesome looking and there's a great payoff in the twist which is fitting for Derk. Hey, at least the Osirusians kept their bargain and didn't go back on their word.
At least the rest of the crew will be able to go back to Earth safely and warn of the Osirusians.

Derk learned a bit too late, that beauty was in the eye of the beholder, or perhaps in his case, the eye of the beer holder, as maybe the Osirusan girl wouldn't look so bad to him after a few drinks.

So Stan claims he didn't figure out the ending until the last panel, though he set it up 6 panels before that ... that, right there, is an incredible piece of scripting! Kidding aside, I love Stans hyperbole -- it really sets up the fun that is coming later serves the same niche as your normal horror host.

I love the design of the alien, especially after they crush the one crew member to death. They are pretty ... menacing.

And of course the ending is great, and for me, it's even better as I imagine the Osirusan's knew better, but they were just out to screw Derk for fun.

I almost expected a "redemption" kind of story, with Derk coming to everyone's rescue, and probably getting killed doing it.
