Magazines of the Mummy

Mummy madness (and Double Post December) continues, with a trip into the realm of b/w magazine mummy tales-- one deadly serious, and one not even remotely close to being so! First up, from the August 1973 issue of Eerie #50, Steve Skeates and Jaime Brocal team-up for a super sinister stalker of a story, followed by a kooktacular cornball classic from Quasimodo's Monster Magazine #8, from 1976 --and thanks again to Drazen Kozjan for the images from this one too! And don't forget, my new MUMMIES book is on sale NOW and available everywhere finer (and not so finer) books are sold!

Loved the first story. Good art, original premise. Very interesting. Would like to see the sequel(s) if there are any. He's almost like the Egyptian Swamp Thing. However, it is hard to decide who is more evil: the mummy's persona or the truly ugly "protagonist" that possesses it? What has he got against milkmen, anyways?

Thanks for posting.

The Mummy was one of Eerie's attempts at a more Marvel-like structure, it was a continuing story, or as Eerie called them something like "strangest heroes of all." They had a bunch of them, like Hunter, went through different time periods and even did team ups with other Eerie heroes. This series got increasingly silly but fun, I think once he ended up switching minds with a werewolf from another running series!

This was probably the 2nd or 3rd chapter, Eerie did a pretty decent job of making each story stand alone. I think there was a bunch of different guys inhabiting the mummy. If it seems like my memory is hazing on this, a lot of the Eerie hero stuff kind of flew by. I like it; it made it different from Creepy, but it wasn't super memorable. Awesome art as usual for this time in Warren mags.

Good ending on the second story!

Brian Barnes--The Mummy of this series didn't switch minds with the werewolf character--but they did end up running into one another. The werewolf did get his body swapped with another mummy--not the one from this series--and to make things even more bizarre--yes, he still turned into a werewolf during the full moon.

Ha, thanks @glowworm2 ... I wasn't ready to dig into my back issues to look that up!

Brian Barnes--I was wandering through some issues online--just leafing through--not thoroughly reading them--just enough to kind of know what was going on.

The only Eerie issue I ever knew with the Mummy character (until more recently) is # 48, but that story made a real impression on me.
Speaking of those series, the one I came closest to knowing well is Dax the Warrior, a sword and sorcery series with a pretty "heavy" side. That same issue, # 48, has Dax trying to stop a human sacrifice tradition, and not succeeding. I'm sure you don't often see THAT kind of ending in sword and sorcery.
