Creepshow Comic Book Replica

THOIA readers and horror film / comic fans in general will find this of interest: it's a Creepshow comic book replica from the 1982 horror film directed by George Romero and written by Stephen King. Now of course we are all aware of the Bernie Wrightson comic book adaptation too, but what's really neat about this version is that UK artist Stephen Snowdon spent about a month cobbling together screen grabs from the movie, as well as scanned pictures to recreate the comic as it appears in the original, and best, Creepshow film! I truly love this movie and have always been fascinated by the briefly glimpsed comic book art featured as the animated, page-turning transitions between the stories. NOTE: this doesn't appear to be complete stories, just the pages as seen onscreen.

Snowdon has currently made a limited quantity of 10 available for $30 each on eBay, click HERE for more info and additional sample pix. A joltingly unique item, and just in time for xmas for that special certain Creepshow creep in your life!

Get one-- before Nathan Grantham gets YOU!

[The auction is, of course, long over but the photographs are still worth seeing! -- Nequam]

I would imagine most readers of this blog have the Wrightson version by now, it's essential

I actually pulled out my copy of Creepshow and looked it over after seeing this post. It's a very clean and bright illustration style for Wrightson, with relatively few of the heavy black shadows he used back in his DC days. I think THE CRATE remains my favourite from the book and the movie. It's got a real sense of wonder and mystery and dread in a Lovecraftian way, mixed with the classic EC-style vengeful spouse.

This movie comic recreation looks like a real labour of love. A highly specialized Christmas gift for somebody that would require a very in tune gift-giver! It's pretty cool. Thanks for drawing our attention to it.

Creepshow is Romero and King's love letter to pre code horror... and I've certainly shared my adoration for this film here at THOIA over the years-- just keyword CREEPSHOW in the archives :)

You know, I feel a little guilty that my first reaction to seeing this was "finally"--not only because it's been such a long time coming, but because this was kind of a holy grail film prop for me and my friends back in high school (this, Deckard's gun, the fertility idol, Freddy Kruger's glove, etc.). Making distribution copies seemed like a no-brainer thirty years ago. I'm so glad someone has taken it upon themselves to finally do something that should have been given away at the box office as promo material. I hope this makes its way into a Shout! Factory Bru-ray or something.

I am totally stocked at the attention to detail here. Lovely how the voodoo doll order form has already been cut out and everything.

AND! I'm most blown away that no one has ever created an actual ongoing Creepshow comic series! As much as King is involved with comics (Dark Tower for example) why hasn't some publisher jumped on the Creepshow name?

For that matter, I don't know why Marvel's massive movie megafranchise isn't dropping a JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY sequel on the box office every October. I mean, they could totally make them for about a hundredth of a typical AVENGERS-sized price tag, and I'm sure that they'd be awesome holiday hits, capitalizing on fond memories of CREEPSHOW and TALES FROM THE CRYPT in a way that Marvel obviously has more of a right than anybody to do. Anthology horror is pretty big right now. Marvel could certainly get pretty cutting edge with it, take inexpensive chances, employ budding talent, etc.

I would be WAY into that, but I'm guessing they look at things more on a merchandise scale as well... action figures and vehicles for ages 4-12. But yeah, horror is probably the most profitable film genre next to action films, why not at least try one?

Mr. Cavin has an excellent idea there. Low budget Journey Into Mystery anthology movies every October is an incredible idea. Sadly, I can tell you such a pitch would meet with blank stares from the typical Hollywood execs, and fly over their heads like the vapour trail from a 767. But I bet if an A-list director came in and pitched it they'd be all over it, without a clue of what they're all over. But maybe things are different at Marvel than at other studios? I shouldn't sell them short.

And yeah, an ongoing CREEPSHOW comic book seems like it should have been going a decade ago! If they'd have real illustration talents doing it, rather than the usual band of manga-cutsie inspired cartoonists, it could really be something.

Hollywood should put THOIA and it's readers in charge of horror films for the next year or so-- I believe we can convince a few people about a few things.
