Castle of Fright

We're celebrating Lon Chaney Jr's 107th birthday today with a frightening tale set in a castle, strangely enough titled-- Castle of Fright! from the November 1953 issue of Voodoo #12. And after the fright-filled, castley story, continue the Chaney celebration with one of Lon's favorite recipes, from an old Mogan David wine recipe booklet (also from the Karswell Kollection!)

Ah, Lon Chaney Jr, my favorite of the Universal monster actors. Wolf Man, Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man, and A&C Meet Frankenstein are my favorite Universal monster pics. He brought so much gravitas to Larry Talbot, especially in FMWM. The scene where the townsfolk are singing about how great it is to be alive is one of my favorites.

If you comic splash panel is going to use the word "blood", "bloody", and "red mist ... covering the white snow" how about you show some blood?

I'm not sure I get the Scooby Doo plan, here. So, let's say it works and he scared off our hero. He's eventually going to have to explain to the police how the uncle died, and they aren't going to buy the ghost story! I think the will turning everything over to him will pretty much make him suspect #1, being he was the only other guy in the castle!

Let's just say he should have spent less time on the costume and more time on the plan!

"Y-You never mentioned it to me, I notice!" Has to be one of the better examples of good dialog in the whole medium, though.

Hahahaha! I love it!

Sure, the story looks like Swiss cheese with extra CO2 pumped in, but I love it anyway! The art is so reminiscent of others like it, but best of all, it is pure camp before camp was camp (or even defined)!

Yes indeed, Scooby Doo would have had a great time with this one. Copyright abuse notwithstanding, I would like to see the gang in this one in a remake631 flosaf.

Any love for that decapitation splash?

It was pretty good, but the artifacts of a vertebra, trachea, esophagus, and spurting carotids of the unfortunate Mr. MacLeod would have been nice, along with copious amounts of crimson clinging to the ersatz Laird's steel thruster.
