Two spooky tales from the July 1952 issue of Black Magic Vol. 2 #8, and the first day this week in THOIA’s multiple post look at this landmark Prize Publications series produced by the legendary dynamic duo of Simon and Kirby. The main point of focus for this fest will be on well told, atmospheric ghost stories and witchcraft featuring great, moody art (of course!) Prize was definitely not short of amazing talent, as exampled today with Bill Draut mastering our first eerie tale, and George Roussos on the second.

AN AWESOME DOUBLE HEADER KARS!! JUST AWESOME!
Holy cow!! That splash on "The Voice of the Dead" is amazing! Although it is somewhat marred by the fact that Draut was obviously told to approximate Kirby's style and compositional sense, it overcomes that handicap easily. Just gorgeous. Draut was totally underrated throughout his career, except by his fellow artists. Toth loved his work and he collaborated a number of times with him on the DC mystery books. "Voice..." was a nice story, too, but what was with that one panel in the middle of the tale where Abigail suddenly gets all non-standard English on us? When she pipes up with an "ain't," it stopped me cold in the story.
As for "The Mailed Fist of McGonigle," it's nice to see Roussos at the height of his powers.
Thanks so much, Kars. A great duo. I look forward to the rest of this week's posts.
Love the "inside the fireplace looking out" POV on page 2 panel 2.
What a great way to spend a windy, spooky Saturday night!
I think I hear someone calling me...
