Web of Horror

The world wide web can be a horrible place for sure, --but so can a cemetery! And that's why today it's time to oopsie-daisy on the old "bury 'em now / dig 'em up later for money" routine. And as usual, we archival specialists of THOIA trickster atrocities discover (yet again, sigh) that this fatally flawed "fast one" rarely ever actually works. From the same revolting, jolting, July - August 1951 issue of Weird Adventures #2 as our previous post. GCD believes the art here is by eerie Ed Moline, unfortunately, nobody has a clue about that great flaming dungeon cover design. We'll be back shortly tho because OMG it's already almost September again! Where does the time go as we lay here pondering what comes next? Under 6 feet of dirt. Air growing thinner. The sound of worms churning. So dark. Are my eyes open, or closed? When did I last clear my web browser history cache? Stay. Tombed.

The Venus of Ille

As long as the sinister statues are rampaging this week (HERE), might we allow a fine female form of art to get in on the bone crushing action as well? This is a nicely told tale from the July - August 1951 issue of Weird Adventures #2, and is based on the classic short story by Prosper Merimee (read it HERE!) Art on this one is by the ever underrated, Bob Jenney, who started out his illustrative career way back in the late 30's working on pulps and young adult books. After the war, he continued steadily producing quality visuals for nearly every big name publisher in the biz, rounding out his career in the late 60's with Creepy and Eerie classics for Warren Publications. Longtime THOIA followers might remember his tremendous Dell adaptation of The Creature from the Black Lagoon that we featured HERE in 2010...

Blood Vengeance!

Like our last post, today's bloody ghost tale is also nicely illustrated by Charles Nicholas, and while it feels like the usual, colorful sort of 7-page ACG or Ace Magazines story, it's actually from the October 1951 issue of Weird Adventures #3 (see the Dr. Psycha tale posted last month from the same issue HERE!) Oh yeah, one other thing setting Blood Vengeance apart from the auspicious ACG or Ace tropes is the horrifically holy moly brutal climax which you just have to see to believe. THUD!

The Ghoulish Revenge of Dr. Psycha

Everyone liked that last Weird Adventures story so much, let us indulge in another one, this time from the October 1951 issue of Weird Adventures #3. Dick Kirby was apparently created to be an ongoing feature, unfortunately, this interesting P. L. Publishing series mix of pulpy horror and dynamic detective action tales came to an end with this charmingly creepy third issue. Some really fun / different kind of dialog here too-- and once again adios to that fourth wall!

I haven't posted a puppet tale around here in a very long time, and today's excursion into the July - August 1951 issue of Weird Adventures #2 finds us a story perfectly overflowing with the unhinged craziness that you've come to love and expect from these pulse-pounding, precode perplexers!
