Face of Love / Death + Essays into the Supernatural: The Werewolf

Another 70's comic book that made a huge impression on young Mr. Karswell was the April 1974 issue of Red Circle Sorcery #6. Awaiting readers behind that amazing, Vampira-esque cover design by the late, great Gray Morrow, (one of my most favorite covers ever), was a nifty little tie-in tale about a radio DJ and his #1 deadicated fan in listener land! Even at a a single digit age, I still recognized this spooky Marv Channing / Vicente Alcazar spin on the cool 'n creepy Clint Eastwood cinematic classic, "Play Misty For Me" (1971.) And Gray Morrow wasn't finished with the cover, --also included within this issue was his fun one-page filler "Essay into the Supernatural" about "The Werewolf", which rounds out today's post on a ferocious, snarling high note.

Flash Forward to the satanic 70's, and here's an evil classic conjured up by George Kashdan and Vicente Alcazar for the December 1974 issue of Witching Hour #49. Also, for anyone looking for HAUNTED HORROR #6 this week (as incorrectly reported), it'll actually be in stores next week on Sept 4th!

The Happy Dead / The Terrible Trident!

Continuing with our look at Red Circle Comic Group's very short lived 70's MADHOUSE horror series, here are two from the Sept '74 issue of Madhouse #95. Starting off with "The Happy Dead" (no nods to The Grateful Dead necessary), this is a hilarious story that Doug Wildey may or may not have used Barbara Steele photos for as reference in a few panels-- but it's most certain that German "El Vampiro" Robles pops in for whatever reason in the middle of page 5! And then, "The Terrible Trident!" picks up where we left off in our last post with yet another devil story, and one very familiar, almost monotonous punchline ending! I was saving this one for Halloween, but here ya go anyway, typically cool art from Vicente Alcazar-- and how about that creepy Gray Morrow cover!
