Two Must Die

Another chilly classic from the Spring 1953 issue of Ghost Comics #6, this one set in a deadly, apparition loaded old mine shaft. Nice work from the ever dependable team of Benulis and Abel, and check out that gorgeous Maurice Whitman cover! If you've never read "The Sleepers in the Crypt" which is mentioned on the cover, check the THOIA Archive by CLICKING HERE after today's story!

This has a lot of interesting art in it. The bubble background, the star background, the vertical mist/smoke on the last panel, all the floating heads. It works really well! And the background elements call back to the final "ka-rash" panel.

Page 2, panel 4 with the spooky skeleton holding the head ... that's a great 3D image. Next page, panel 3 is also great.

Obviously the story is predictable but as a vehicle for all this great art is a real winner!

I have to agree that the art here is terrific. I also believe that the inking and coloring worked to enhance the enjoyment of this one.
Thank you Karswell!

This one has some social comment, but either way, it still works as a horror story.

So, in a nutshell, the workers wont go back to work until the company is kaput, the owners gone. Finders keepers. I guess they really were holding out till they could mine that vein themselves. Pretty clever.

Digging the scratchy art here for sure. Everyone looks like a furry wolfman! Even the skeletons!

I agree with what Mr. Barnes is saying about the negative space here, and the visual consistency it created across the story. But I want to go on to say that I really appreciate how the fanciful cloud of stars surrounding all the ghosts directly evokes their mechanism of death. It's clever and aesthetic storytelling that reminds me a lot of the Red Knight from the Fisher King. But still that miner at the bottom of page four definitely looks like he died wearing his Collegeville costume.

Maybe this could be updated with Amazon and a warehouse. ;)
