Screams in the Night

Sorry for the lack of consistant updates around here lately, I've been attempting to catch up on some other personal stuff in preparation for San Diego Comic-Con 2012... that's right, make sure to stop by the IDW / Yoe Books booth next month and say hi, as me and Craig will both be attending to promote ZOMBIES! --I'll have other related news on this to follow soon as well! And in the meantime (as in nasty nazi meanie), here's a horrifically grim, WW2 screamer from the March 1953 issue of Haunted Thrills #7.

  1. If ever a family needed a Taurus Judge, the doktor and little Elsa did when the Gestapo arrived. My blood ran cold with hate for those Ratzi cowards and their psychopath chieftain.
    Aggghhh!
That's what they are...cowards. History shows us over and over that no matter the time or country, conquerors are just schmucks.
    Turok can't stand them, either.
See, Marvel would have had Captain America and Bucky clean their clocks.

  2. "Get that smell, Daddy-o!"

This artist seemed to have a little trouble capturing the likeness of Hitler. When standing in the doorway, putting on his gloves, he looked more like a 70s pornstar (or Tom Sellick)!

I don't know why, but that unmerciful hanging of his daughter is probably the most disturbing image I've seen in a pre-code.

  3. I have to agree with Tim, that hanging panel really does have an impact.

Everybody always forgets Hitler had a very advanced case of Parkinson's disease. He wouldn't have lasted much past 45 even if he got out of the bunker. Yes, I'm injecting logic into pre-code horror, sorry!

Congrats (again) on your book, may there be many more!

  4. I like that little DUNCE cap-shaped thing he rested on "Hitler's" face while preparing to operate at the bottom page three. It's gone by the next panel, so I assume Herr Doktor just needed someplace to put it down for a minute. I am also a little amazed at that luridly sleazy sixties Italian cinema splash panel.

I thought the art here was very nice. Most of the figure drawing (and all of the figure foreshortening and perspective) were really excellent. This here was a way better use of the circle frames, too. they were still punched down my throat a little unnecessarily, but this artist really had a great sense of pulling the whole page together around what he had. Look at the way he mirrored the arch of the aberrant panel using the basement architecture at the bottom of page five, for example. It's easy to miss the first time through because that horrifying scene is moving along so expertly. Or check the genius use of that shadow line that draws the eye in a diagonal slash into the ever-present circle on page four. Actually, page four in a particularly fine example of good graphic storytelling from top to bottom.

Though Hitler looks more like Jason Robards in a novelty mustache to me.
