We ended July 2011 with the question of "Lady or the Tigress?" Now we kick off August 2011 with a simple question mark... I guess if this tale had actually been written in the last few years it would be called "WTF?!" From the January 1953 issue of Worlds of Fear #8.

I love that monster! Like something out of ROCK AND ROLL NIGHTMARE!
ReplyDelete>love that monster! Like something out of ROCK AND ROLL NIGHTMARE!
ReplyDeletehaha, or a Sid & Marty Krofft show!
There's actually some great writing at the beginning here, before it all gives way to glorious batshittery! And you've gotta love a story that doesn't mind giving you a flashback WITHIN a flashback! That's double the value, kids!
ReplyDeleteI can't help wondering how the change was wrought upon poor Paul. Tribal magic? An undiscovered drug? Whatever it was, it's shockingly ineffective against Paul's stylish hairdo, the last remains of his humanity!
And I love how the scientists know there's a way out b/c they can feel the air currents and follow the stream--observant lot--but yet never stop to wonder just where all the illumination is coming from in those caves! It's like daylight down there!
Finally, what "things" did the two monsters come back for? Books? Photos? A sewing kit? More Brylcreem?:D
Great stuff, Karswell!
Love the "monster" :(not to be cruel, but what would *you* call the poor wretch!) Hey; if the comic hadn't panned out; maybe the story could have turned into the script of one of those 1950's "So gloriously cheesy it's a classic" sci-fi movies?:)

They are Cyclopean chloroglobs.
ReplyDeleteHaving relations with her turned Paul into a Cyclopean chloroglob, too. Yaaaack! He must REALLY have been grateful.
Mell of a hess, really.
WTF? is right.
I love this tale. It's about transitions, really. Some people adapt and change no matter what the difficulties and uncertainties (and Paul is cool with it, so... great!). And some folks cannot.
That's it. Cyclopean chloroglobs--outstanding!!
Very nice, thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteHaha, good question Vic... hopefully it wasn't a mirror!
>Love the "monster"
He's a winner in my book too, DB.
>Cyclopean chloroglobs--outstanding!!
I should've made a month long theme out of Cyclopean chloroglobs-- damn, the missed opps here at THOIA sometimes stagger the mind!
Thanks to everyone who stopped by for this one (I am shocked though that no one pointed out the hilarious panel 1 over panel 3 on page 3... it's like a man sawed a woman in two-- and then put her back together rather badly!) Oh well, missed opps seem to be the actual theme around here lately, let's try a little harder on the next post-- coming SOON. I promise.
reeks of Lovecraft, ever so pungently...which is a good thing.

ReplyDeleteyup!
Great story. I love page eight--the groovy color, the groovy weirdness, everything. What's up with the Matt Baker book you linked at the end of the post? The ***NEWS!*** link won't work for me (but the Amazon link works fine). Is this one you're endorsing? Jim Amash is a friend of mine, and I've been thinking about picking the book up. Would love to know what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteSheldon Moldoff isn't trying to emulate Alex Raymond or Bob Kane here, but the face in the final panel on page 7 does seem to channel Graham Ingels.
