Boppin' along with Bill Everett's beautiful blonde bombshell creation-- the ever vivacious Venus! I had planned to give you a double post today but ran out of time (sorry!) ...you'll just have to come back this weekend for the last story in our Venus Fest. From the December 1951issue of Venus #17. (Brian Hirsch scans.)
Karswell, thanks for the plugola. My check is in the mail. I'd forgotten I'd shown that story, and if you'd shown it yourself no one would have caught it, including me.
ReplyDeleteThis is really great stuff. Everett was just so damn good!
Nice. He hires an investigator to come and look into his own seemingly successful murder scheme. How could that possibly backfire? And I'm interested in the fast one pulled with the daughter here. I'm sensing a pattern when it comes to the tactics this title is willing to employ to keep us guessing. In the last Venus story, the baddie is presented as solid on the first page (or so) and then revealed to be a ghost--evinced by its intangibility--by the end. Here we have the opposite: a totally see-through girl when introduced later surprises us by not really being a ghost at all in the end.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise this is excellent as advertised. I actually like the lazy ass field coloring here a lot. It really works with Everett's panel compositions.
that was just wacky!
ReplyDeletePreposterous as Hell, but also awesome.
ReplyDeleteThank you a thousand thousand times for this!!! It is the one I was talking about. It is every bit as satisfying as I had hoped it would be.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been wunderbar indeed had Cathy become a sidekick for Venus (doubleteamer's fantasy!), but alas, the title only lasted a bit longer.
Gadzooks, I love Venus!!!!!
We are indebted to you for this great journey to 1951's innermost dreams!
Many thanks for these Venus stories, Kars (and Brian!)- I don't have this stuff and it's just such wonderful comic art! Bill Everett just KILLED on Venus!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments, it was about time Venus got some recognition at THOIA, I've gawked at those awesome horror covers of hers for years, tried my hand at aquiring copies on ebay, but alas this is one series that continues to elude me. I had to finally break down and ask for scans from ever reliable Brian (who of course owns every comic book on the planet.)
ReplyDeleteOne more Venus story to go, I may even post the non-Venus stories from these issues sometime next week if everyone is interested. Have a great weekend!
Maybe I really need to get my mind out of the gutter, but I was kind of under the impression that the two ladies had, uh, "formed a connection" by the end of the story. I mean, Cathy got a little too excited when Venus asked her to come to America with her…
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm really enjoying these stories. Yes, they're pretty goofy, but Venus is a fun character.
Also, a happy belated birthday to you, Karswell!
Yes; Karswell (if they're *any* good!); *include any non-"Venus" Venus stories (as well as any other non-title stories from any other horror comics!) that you have. And that goes for "Golden", "Silver" or any other "Age" you have (well; maybe not "Lead"! Though there was supposedly a "Dark Age" for the "Batman comic books; in tone, though, not like in the sense of history's "Dark Ages: I hope!

Thanks Karswell!! I've been a long time reader of this site and so far, this is the first time I have commented. You do an awesome job here and I have also recommended other people to read this blog.
ReplyDeleteLong live THOIA!
Thanks again for the continued comments and birthday wishes, THOIA has the best followers of any blog on the planet!
ReplyDeleteIt won't work in reality, that's exactly what I consider.
