Someone over at Standard Comics really liked the " 'Til / Till Death Do Us Part " title, because they used it two issues in a row: the July 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #9 (Joe Orlando art?), and the October 1953 issue of Out of the Shadows #10. Two interesting tales, with two morbidly satisfying outcomes. (fyi: issue completists, Out of the Shadows #9 is now on THOIA in its entirety.)
"...and just look at my art director."
ReplyDeleteAh, I just love those "milquetoast revenge on harpy wife" stories! An extremely common conceit in the comics you feature, Karswell, and it always makes me wonder about the private lives of the artists and writers behind them!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of artists, that's some very striking near-expressionistic work in the first TDDUP there--Henry's saggy great suit, his enormous shape-shifting head, and of course that flaming denouement. Fantastic!
Paired with the first, the secret of the second story seemed kind of telegraphed, but still pretty groovy. An excellent double-dose of veiled-corpse goodness today, K!
Great stuff again K!
ReplyDeleteWhen I get to "jones'n" (jones-in?) for my daily fix of thrills, chills, and kid kool entertainment, I know that I can always come to THOIA and everything is right again.
Kudos

I liked them both! The wife being confronted by her flaming husband (dead? alive? somewhere in between?) was a nice, nasty shock. The cruel, mean-spirited ending to the second one was also pretty sweet. Two thumbs up.
ReplyDeleteI AGREE TWO KILLER STORYS!! I HAVE A NEW FOUND RESPECT FOR THIS SERIES,NOT THAT FELT BAD ABOUT IT BEFORE OR ANYTHING BUT SERIOUSLY GOOD STUFF! THANKS.....
ReplyDeleteThat first "T'il" looks like Sekowsky to me, a Standard stalwart.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned, this now finishes out the entire issue of Out of the Shadows #9, (check for other stories posted earlier this month, as well as the THOIA archives containing "Hanged by the Neck", and Reed Crandall's classic "The Corpse That Came to Dinner.")
ReplyDeletefyi: by the time we finish out this Standard Comics fest I will have also posted Out of the Shadows #7 and #10 in their entirety too. Thanks again for all of the superb comments!
excellent art on both stories. why is it that i feel sorry for the husband in the second story and still think the brother is an ass?...
ReplyDelete"The fire is good...it cleans..it washes out the dirt of life."
ReplyDeleteClassic.
Ain't love grand?
Haha, you guys kill me... okay, making this dirt life even more worth it (without all the fiery fire of course) with an insane Rocco Mastroserio tale up next--- don't miss it! Thanks again.
