Witch Doctor / Witch Doctor's Revenge
Like an old B-movie jungle horror double feature today, THOIA brings you two violent tales of 100% weird witch doctors! Our first tale comes from the Feb. 1954 issue of Spellbound #19, (art by Tony DiPreta) and our back-up story is from the Dec. 1952 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #38. And really now, "Are witch doctors even scary?" I was asked this question recently... well?

Er, somehow I misread the second title as "Adventures into Terror" (should have had my morning coffee before commenting). Since "Adventures into the Unknown" was published by long-dead ACG rather than Atlas / Marvel ("Spellbound" publisher), their image is obviously public domain.
ReplyDeleteThe punchline of "Witch Doctor's Revenge" makes me wonder if this is an uncredited adaptation of Robert Bloch's "Sweets to the Sweet". (It was turned, minus the ending, into a pretty good segment of the Amicus anthology film The House That Dripped Blood.)
ReplyDeleteYes, witch doctors are scary. particularily the one in Witch Doctor's Revenge. I love the cool way he applies a kind of bear-trap logic to the problem of how to save his grandson. I admire a man that can think on his bare feet.

Last time I ever eat a Hostess Fruit Pie.

ReplyDeleteI do wish there would better film productions involving witch doctors. There has not been an acceptable adaptation of the genre since The Serpent and the Rainbow back in the '80s.

You're probably right Steve... though if anyone else has any obscure film recommendations (new or old) about witch doctors please let us know.

TWO GOOD EXAMPLES OF ATLAS AND ACG. I THINK WITCH DOCTORS ARE PRETTY CREEPY TO BE HONEST, SPECIALLY THE HEAD HUNTER VARIETY!
