Time for the strange, open ended conclusion to the Dell Movie Classic #537version of The Mummy (Sept / Nov 1962.) As Drew explained in the comments of our previous Dell offering last month (see Dracula), "The endings of at least three of the early 1960s Dell Monster Classics ("Dracula," "Frankenstein," and "The Creature") make it plain that a sequel was contemplated, and the "The Wolfman" and "The Mummy" could also have been reinterpreted to be less final than they looked. Somehow these sequels never came to be." It's too bad too, because The Mummy could definitely benefit from a bigger / better ending, or another issue or two. Come back next month for The Wolfman!

FOR SURE THERE SOULD HAVE BEEN A SEQUEL. I FIND THE PANELS WHERE THEY HAVE CAUGHT HIM AND IN THE CAR TO BE REALLY FUNNY. THATS SOME MUMMY HUMILATION FOR SURE!AHAHAHAHA
It seems Jack Sparling's fate to be forever underappreciated. regardless of endings - I'm loving this art! I waited with baited breath for this post, and was not disappointed. I never am by Sparling. Thanks for posting this!
Boy, the comments are waaaay down lately... making me rethink even posting The Wolf Man next month. Oh well, thanks to those that did comment, we have some wacky witch doctors lined up next.
Hmm -- I'd obviously forgotten the specific ending to Dell's "Mummy" story. (Your posting in the first time I've seen a copy since 1962!)
ReplyDeleteCLEARLY a sequel was planned for it, too.

ReplyDeleteWell I for one certainly hope you post the Wolf Man comic. I am really enjoying these Dell Movie Classics and appreciate all you do. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteWith the characters present in the "era of the Mummy", it would seem there is no end of stories that could be told in subsequent issues.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
