Mummy Mondays meet THOIA LYRIC CHALLENGE CONTEST #2! And our brave guest judges this time around are ::drum roll:: toddler terror experts Unkle Lancifer and Aunt John from Kindertrauma!
Same rules apply as before, merely find appropriate (or inappropriate) song lyrics that match this week's pre-code horror stories. There will be TWO winners* announced Saturday morning, August 23rd, the contest ends Friday night the 22nd; Unk L will pick the first prize winner, and Auntie J will pick the second place. Prizes include THOIA and Kindertrauma shirts, an Afterschool Special (’76-’77) DVD set, spooky real photos from my fabulously talented friend and photographer Dania Hurley (of All Eyes and Ears fame), and hopefully more goodies still to be determined. It’s gonna be a blast so don’t miss out! *Remember: You must enter at least 3 times this week to be eligible to win. And now, on with the story…
From the February 1951 issue of Web of Mystery #1
Well, you know, at least Karen's got that whole "happy and fruitful life" thing coming to her after this.
ReplyDeleteI love this scene: archaeologists see jewelry on the floor of the tomb. "Why, it's my missing ring! But how... that door hasn't been opened in 8,000 years." So then "Holy cow," the reader thinks, "must be mummies." Who knows what the scientists themselves are supposedly thinking, since they obviously don't believe in mummies. This fine point is left unaddressed.
ReplyDeleteIn reality, I imagine the dialog to be something like: "Why, that's MY ring, hang it all. The natives must have already looted the place. Have them all rounded up and shot, Dr. Dembrow."
Floyd:
You better run all day
And run all night
And keep your dirty feelings
Deep inside
And if you take your girlfriend
Out tonight,
You better park the car well out of sight
'Cos if they catch you in the back seat trying to pick her locks
They’re gonna send you back to mummy in a cardboard box
(You better run)
"I've come to dig up a royal tomb in a country famous for cursed tombs. What could possibly go wrong?" Archaelogists aren't superstitious enough for their own good.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone listening who's ever found themselves unwillingly wrapped and trapped in a sarcophagus under umpty-dumpty tons of rock, this is for you:
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees,
Send me off forever but I ask you please,
Don't fence me in.
Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the western skies.
On my Cayuse, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the mountains rise.
I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses
And I can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in.
Bing Crosby
All right, Karswell. I'll play along this time, for what it's worth.
ReplyDeleteHere is a tune by Fall:
I'm a mummy
I scare people
Look what happens when I walk up to somebody
I'm a mummy
I was born one thousand nine hundred and fifty nine years ago
Look what happens when I walk up to somebody
I don't try to scare people
I really came back to meet Paul McCartney
But people run from me
Watch what happens when I walk up to somebody
I wish there was someone somewhere that wasn't scared of me
I'm a mummy
The ending was a bit predictable , and the artwork is a sort of "second string Rip-Kirby-era Alex Raymond" but all in all , not a bad story .
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing
My entry for the lyric contest ia a song from speed metal pioneers ABATTOIR "Screams from the Grave"
Sarcophagus
ReplyDelete"Who dares disturb
My blissful sleep?
Again in anger
must I rise.
How long, unknown
I lay entombed.
My world,
So long forgotten,
Did disown me.
Usurper;
I was scorned.
The suffering they did inflict...
Stained with cosmic black sins
The sun no longer sets me free."

KIND OF SHOCKED NO ONE HAS CHOSEN THE MUMMY SONG FROM MAD MONSTER PARTY YET!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, this story was kind of light on the action. You could see where it was going a loooong time before it got there, and while the wrapped-up archaeologist was a nice touch, it just seemed like it took too much of the scenic route, iykwim.
ReplyDeleteI did appreciate the "thieving natives!" line, though, and the left-hand bottom panel on pg3--who pencilled that, Picasso? :)
As to lyrics, I guess I'll go with the obvious one here:
When I was living this lie, fear was my game
People would worship and fall-drop to their knees
So bring me the blood and red wine for the one to succeed me
For he is a man and a god, and he will die too!
Tell me why I had to be a powerslave?
I don't wanna die, I'm a god, why can't I live on?
When the life-giver dies, all around is laid waste--
so in my last hour, I'm a slave to the power of death!
Slave to the power of death!
I think the first verse and chorus of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Scarecrow" is rather fitting:
ReplyDeleteHe trembles in the bitter wind
Until it's time for us to speak
Whilst others here are sleeping sound
I'll slip away by floorboard creak
Upon the hill he'll hear my secrets
Shock the colours to bleach inside
Whilst others there are sleeping sound
Just we two will confide
Listen to his body moan
Make a wish and send us home
To spin the gold and silver stitches
We can turn his rags to riches
Nice kick-off to this week's contest ya'll... and I'm glad to see people who already won shirts still playing along too, the more the merrier! For those who need to know, the rest of this week's contest will be ALL ATLAS tales. Got a couple from Adventures into Weird Worlds, Menace, and Marvel Tales, so please stick around, things are just starting to get scary.
ReplyDelete"Mummies alright, deadies alright, they just seem a little weird..."
Well, he can't say he wasn't warned.
ReplyDeleteI was kind of relieved to see him finally get it. I was a little worried that mummy was all talk.
I agree with jeffos.
ReplyDeleteThis diamond ring doesn't shine for me anymore
And this diamond ring doesn't mean what it did before
So if you've got someone whose love is true
Let it shine for you
I know, it's too late to post for Monday's comic, but i was sick yesterday, and after I saw this today, I had to post:
ReplyDeleteI've been watchin' you for days now baby.
I just love your sexy ways now baby.
Ya know my love will never stop now baby.
Just put your lovin' in my box now baby.
Wrap it up, I'll take it,
Wrap it up, I'll take it.
Fabulous Thunderbirds
>I know, it's too late to post for Monday's comic
ReplyDeleteActually, it's never too late to ever comment. If it's still visible on the week of homepage posts then I will see it and so will the judges during contests.
Thanks.
