Teaser trailer for the upcoming film from H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society Motion Pictures. These guys have been producing the absolute best, most accurate HPL adaptations ever, and if you haven’t seen their silent film version of The Call of Cthulhu or heard any of their 1930’s style old time radio shows based on HPL stories then don’t delay!

Awesome. I only heard of and saw the CoC movie recently, and was very impressed. I'm always very wary of movies that are supposed to be based on Lovecraft's work. They tend to be crap and not at all faithful, and I'm just too big of a geek to appreciate a movie, regardless of how good it is, if it uses Lovecraft's name without being true enough. Dagon was good, as was ReAnimator, but everything else has fallen very short. The guy who did ReAnimator is supposedly working on a sequel starring William H. Macy, and Guillermo del Toro has expressed some interest in doing a Mountains of Madness. I'm excited about those, but moreso about this one. Thanks for posting about it, I probably wouldn't have heard about it otherwise.
ReplyDeleteThat is one eerie trailer and it really makes me want to see more.
ReplyDeleteI just hope that my eyeballs don't melt!
CAN'T WAIT, CTHULHU WAS INCREDIBLE. I WAS ACTUALLY JUST WONDERING RECENTLY IF THEY WERE GOING TO MAKE ANOTHER HPL FILM ANYTIME SOON. THANKS K-MAN!
ReplyDeleteVery slick, right down to the old-timey cadence of the (human) orator. The camera angles and movement seemed very modern -- not at all like the German Expressionist vibe of the old Universal films -- but that's a minor complaint. I'm looking forward to this, big time.
ReplyDelete>wary of movies that are supposed to be based on Lovecraft
ReplyDeleteMe too... I did like Dagon too though. Del Toro has been talking about doing Mountains of Madness forever so I'll believe it when I finally see it.
>I just hope that my eyeballs don't melt!
Oh, but they will Chuck... they will!!
>THANKS K-MAN!
You're most welcome. But please, never never never call me "K-Man" again ::shudder::
>like the German Expressionist vibe of the old Universal films
They did that with Cthulhu, possibly they're going for a different, more modern approach since Whisperer will be a talkie.
looking forward to this!!!!
ReplyDeleteI inquired about a release date for Whisperer and here's the reply, directly from the tentacled mouth of HPLHS:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post and the kind comments. Right now there’s no release date targeted for Whisperer apart from a vague “around the end of the year”. We’re currently recording a new 1930s style radio play of The Dunwich Horror which should be available in about one month.
Cheers,
Sean

ReplyDeletemy dear friend, sees us! to the next one
Theres a Cthulhu movie? Really becaue I've never heard of it. I see the poster on your blog but it doesnt look real.
ReplyDeleteOh,it's a real movie, just made to look like it was made in the 20's. they did make a version of Cthulhu in 1925,i saw it with Bela Lugosi in 1978 on a double-bill with LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT.
ReplyDelete>Theres a Cthulhu movie? Really becaue I've never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteWell if you've never heard of it then it must not exist. How can this be, the world ponders... a movie that exists without your obvious high sense of all film knowledge?!!
>I see the poster on your blog but it doesnt look real.
??! I don't really even know what to say to you except maybe you should go to www.cthulhulives.org and learn about some stuff before you leave what are easily the worst comments of all time on my blog. Sheesh...
>i saw it with Bela Lugosi in 1978 on a double-bill with LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT.
Ha ha
Bela Lugosi? Is that a real name? Sounds made up to me. If only there were some sort of online reference center, like an internet movie database for example, where these things could be verified. Oh well. I off to see Sand Pirates of the Sahara.
ReplyDeleteJust teasing the other guy who said the film was fake, didn't wanna be rude, just got mad beacause i have the DVD of COC,and thought it strange any Lovecraft fan hadn't at least HEARD heard of it.wonder if this WHISPERER adaption will feature any homages to actors of the time.
ReplyDelete>wonder if this WHISPERER adaption will feature any homages to actors of the time.
ReplyDeleteDon't really see the point in doing that... detracting from the story with actor homages seems much too gimmicky for the HPLHS who take their Lovecraft seriously (thankfully.)
And while we're on the subject, I almost feel it's just a myth that HPL is considered "unfilmable." I feel it's only called that because so many filmakers before have chosen to not take the original source material seriously and/or they call it "unfilmable" because of their lack of ability or imagination. The HPLHS have proven that even with a tiny budget you can remain faithful to the story if you honestly understand what Lovecraft was all about.
I have the Call of Cthulhu DVD too, watched it about 40 times. I also have the gorgeous poster print (which is on display to the right under the POSTER OF THE WEEK.) Top notch team of mad scientists over there...
>didn't wanna be rude
I think it's safe to say that being rude to this commenter is the nicest thing you could do for him/her/it.
>I off to see Sand Pirates of the Sahara.
Hold tight Phibes, I be over shortly after I make the calamari flavored popcorn...
