Howard Nostrand wraps up Vampire Week for us with a simply spun, down-home yarn containing some really fantastic artwork. So fantastic in fact that I have another story from Howie tomorrow for you too... that is if you somehow survive--- The Day of Panic!
From the Dec 1953 issue of Witches Tales #22
WOW IF YOU HADN'T MENTIONED WITCHES TALES OR HARVEY I WOULD HAVE SWORN THIS WAS AN EC STORY. NOSTRAND ALMOST OUT DOES JACK DAVIS HIMSELF!
ReplyDeleteI know!damn!I was expecting the woman to be the vampire,or the whole town was werewolves prejudiced against vampires and that the old man's solitude was a red herring.
ReplyDelete>NOSTRAND ALMOST OUT DOES JACK DAVIS HIMSELF!
ReplyDeleteThe most obvious comparison, true.
>I was expecting the woman to be the vampire,or the whole town
Yeah, the twist ending somehow threw me off the first time too.
wild!
ReplyDeleteIt kind of reminds me of that classic "Twilight Zone" episode "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street", where a neigborhood gets whipped into a frenzy by the possiblity of alien invaders. Interesting also that the vampire was walking around in the broad daylight-different from the usual depiction of sun-phobic vamps.
ReplyDelete>walking around in the broad daylight-different from the usual depiction of sun-phobic vamps.
ReplyDeleteThese daylight panels could have been shot day for night though like in old low budget movies where the proper lighting techonolgy for dark scenes was still not readily available.
Just joking.
I was going to mention the Twilight Zone episode too, but anonymous beat me to it. :)
ReplyDeleteMan, this has got to be one of the sweatiest stories you've published yet, Karswell! Pernicious perspiration...
