Don’t know about your part of the world but mine is currently covered with snow. And I hate snow. So to commemorate this much hated wintery predicament, here’s a rather chilly 3-page horror quickie from Joe Kubert. The fact that he created this art while stationed overseas and serving military duty (hence the mention of Germany under his signature on the splash page) is an awesome bit of historic info, further proving Joe’s incredible dedication to the art of comics. I like to imagine him fighting Nazi’s during the day and inking a comic book by night, but of course this was published seven years after Hitler scrambled his own brains.
From the Fall 1952 issue of Eerie #9
Inspired by the old Headless Horseman story: Make for the chalet and you're safe! Great Kubert. I was in the U.S. Army in Germany in the 1960s. Joe must've had good duty if he found time to draw.
ReplyDeleteTHAT IS REALLY INTERESTING. THE STORY IS OKAY BUT THE ART IS AMAZING AS ALWAYS.......KUBERTS MY NEW HERO!
ReplyDeleteany other artist would have drug this one out to 5 or 6 pages, kubert can tell it beautifully in just 3.
ReplyDeleteI love the design of the "death on skis" character- his head looks alot like a shrivelled old apple. Kubert is just amazing!!

ReplyDeleteYou're right Paps, I didn't even think about that.
>his head looks alot like a shrivelled old apple
Ha ha... from the Vincent Price Shrunken Head Kit!
I have often wondered if Ditko was using Kubert from this time period as a model for style.
ReplyDeleteDitko's prime inspirations were Eisner & Robinson, but yeah,Pete's face looks almost exactly like a Ditko face,so he may indeed have been using Kubert as a model.Love horror stories set in the cold, but i've seen few set a ski resort,it's got potential.
ReplyDeleteDon't let Death have more than two Irish coffees at the lodge--it goes right through him!
ReplyDelete>Love horror stories set in the cold
ReplyDeleteI have a couple frozen tales lined up in the next week or so... don't forget your scarf!
>Don't let Death have more than two Irish coffees
Ha ha... I think the idea of Death on skis is kind of funny in the first place. Look out! It's X-Treme Winter Sport Death on the Black Diamond slope!
