Brian Hirsch takes the horror reins again today and unearths another disgustingly excellent Mister Mystery treat for us, thus giving me and my overheated scanner a much needed break. But I’ll be back for the attack tomorrow unless some other good hearted person out there has some scans they’d like to share as well.
From the Sept 1953 issue of Mister Mystery #13
Mister Mystery really knew how to sugarcoat it.
ReplyDeleteI could see where this was going from the splash panel on page one. Yet the superior artwork kept my interest up until the last panel.
ReplyDeleteYEP NO SURPRISES HERE, BUT THAT FINAL PANEL IS ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC I'VE EVER SEEN. SOMETIMES YOU JUST WANT THE STORIES TO DO SOMETHING THIS OBVIOUS----IN THE NAME OF SUPERNATURAL VENGEANCE I MEAN!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the whole point of pre code comics was to give you what you want and entertain, right? Wertham would have wanted a more wholesome and educational approach, and that of course is the biggest killer of fun.
ReplyDeleteawesome story!!!! doesnt make much sense why the 3 suicidal girls bodies would still be in the river but man that last panel is unreal.....guess the old lady with the big mouth got it the worst
ReplyDeleteGreat!!,so far the best story you've posted this October,i agree the set-up was obvious, but i didn't see THAT ending coming!and even though the art work had a few weak spots(the heads look really big)it made the story distinctive,in fact so far MISTER MYSTERY has come up with some really original set ups for poetic justice murders, rivaling EC in fact, and reading the story aloud(in John Carradine & monty python falsettos)just makes it better.

ReplyDeleteHa ha, I'll have to try that... actually I'll sing them in a Russell Mael falsetto for an even weirder experience. This blog ain't big enough for the both of us!
Another big THANKS to Brian Hirsch for sending me the pre code scans from yesterday and today! Show him some love folks and buy something from his ebay store:

completely amazing story and artwork here- this is genius
ReplyDeleteI've loved this story ever since I first read it in a Ghoul Tales reprint when I was about 10, but I've never seen it in colour until now. Many many thanks to you and Mr Hirsch, you've made my week!
ReplyDeleteThis was looking familiar from the beginning but I couldn't recall where I'd seen it until I read Mark's comment. Yes, I saw it earlier in black and white in some comic or other, many years ago.
