The Fruit of Death

Does everyone worship and adore Rudy Palais yet? If not, I challenge you to show me a better example of fruit in a pre-code story that is more frightening than the ones on display here. These scans might look a little rough, they're from the absolute crummiest condition comic book in my collection... split spine, wrinkled pages and all, I still love this one.

From the Sept 1952 issue of Chamber of Chills #12.

Great posts this morning! Glad you're back too! After all the silly squabbling in the last couple posts and then no new post yesterday I got worried you chucked it all.

It'll take more than some silly squabbling to make me chuck it all. I do this blog for myself as much as I do it for anybody else.

  4. Great stories and art. I looked up the contents for Chamber of Chills #12 and saw that Warren Kramer is credited with a story. I am only familiar with his Casper, Hot Stuff, Stumbo, etc, at Harvey. I must have missed a big part of his career!

Except for a few out of proportion panels(Sarah's giant corpse),that was excellent!in both art and writing, and with a real october theme of death, rebirth, revenge.y'know these 2 posts, along with the HEADLESS HORROR story are really changing my opinion on HARVEY horror comics.

I do alot of flip flopping with Harvey, just when I think I've read the absolute bottom barrel story they suddenly manage to pull out a winner, and vice versa. Their Black Cat Mystery series is loaded with clunkers but some spooky gems too.

I think this is intentional, the oversized corpse symbolizes the enormity of his task and creates an even more uneasy nightmarish quality for the reader when things appear out of sync with reality.

Plus, she obviously loves being an evil piece of fruit, while he hates it (see very last panel.)

  8. The awesomeness of this story cannot be contained by a single awesome, but must be spread out into to three, separate awesomes. Awesome.

  10. The scans look fine to me. I either gave known the comic was crumbling if you hadn't said so. That said I love trees so I'm with Rafe on this one.
