Our Matt Fox story the other day was such a hit that I just had to give you another one before we dive into my Ace Comics Tribute this week. So here it is, an appropriately gruesome Atlas selection, (“appropriate” in that I had to sit and listen to a relative go on and on the other day about deer season opening this week--- so yes, this one’s for you!)
From the November 1953 issue of Adventures into Terror #25
MARVEL SHOULD START COLLECTING STORIES BY PRECODE AUTHORS, I'D DEFINITELY BUY A MAT FOX COLLECTION. THIS ONES GREAT!!!
ReplyDeleteMarvel has done a couple specific artist type collections in the past but it's mostly for the big guns like Kirby, Romita etc... I'm not sure if they ever did one for Matt Fox, that's a great idea though.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I like about this story the most is in the little creep's house on the last page even his lampshades are made out of human tattoos!
another matt fox classic! notice you hav frankenstein featured in the random cover section, would love to see a dick briefer story here sometime too
ReplyDeleteSo you too have had to put up with "huntin'seasin" blowhards too, great story, real cathartic.and with a moral:never threaten skinny short,mohawk-wearing Peter Lorre look-alikes or your skin'll get ripped off!
ReplyDeleteOne of my faves, thanks for posting it! I'll try to scan the Fox from my Mystery Tales #12 this week.
ReplyDeleteSounds good, please scan it in no larger than 150 dpi / 100% scale, and try to save as 28k jpeg. Hard to believe I have a little over a 100 posts now and still only used about 20% of my free blogger space!
ReplyDeleteTo the other commentor: I'll try to get a Dick Briefer story up sometime soon too, would you prefer one of his earlier cartoony Frankenstein stories or one of the later scary ones? Or both?
Also: F*%K HUNTING!!
Yep'fishing is WAAY better.as for Briefer's Frankenstein,i'd love to see a sampling of all eras, the cartoony-looking,but scary stories with Bulldog Denny, the super-hero stories, the funny version, and the horror version, for all his rehashing of plots and loose artwork,Briefer, like James Whale, was one of his mediums most tallented eccentrics.
ReplyDeleteI've got a couple issues from each era (scary and funny) so I'll look through them and see what's worth scanning. There's a pretty good reprint book came out recently reprinting all the later "scary" era Briefer Frankenstein tales, it's black and white only but worth the price I thought.
ReplyDeleteAnd speaking of Frankenstein, I actually just finished reading the golden age Classics Illustrated version--- good god what a depressingly bleak downer of a story! I'll admit I've never read the original Mary Shelly novel but if it's anything like this CI adaption I'd wanna slit my wrists! Loved it!
Yes,the true FRANKENSTEIN by Shelley is one of the most tragic stories ever written,it doesn't get moving till chapter 6,but when it does, and when the monster himself takes over as narrator,it becomes awesome, and the best of the 3 great monster novels, and hopefully, hollywood will realize the book CANT be faithfully adapted,as Kenneth Branagh's overrated shit-fest proves.

ReplyDelete>mohawk-wearing Peter Lorre look-alikes
ReplyDeleteThis guy is a dead-ringer for Steven Hawking if you ask me!
This is an awesome story all around, I love how the main character refers to himself in the 3rd person, and has no qualms about sockin' an old feller in the jaw for bein' lippy.
What a great bully name too,.. Rocky Martin.. hey wait...he's not Livin' La Vida Loc...
ah fuggeddaboudit.
