Today I’ve got a perfect example of successfully mixing horror and sci-fi together, and naturally this works because of the pairing-up of Stan Lee and Bill Everett. Featuring the weirdest, creepiest, zombiest looking aliens of all time (their spacecraft even looks like it’s from the grave), this excellent story launched the Atlas Menace series off to a great start.
From the March 1953 issue of Menace #1
I'M BIG ON MODEL KITS AND ALWAYS WISHED SOMEONE WOULD MAKE ONE OUT OF THE TWO HEADED ZOMBIE ALIENS..... WITH THE SPACESHIP OF COURSE! GREAT STORY!!!!
ReplyDeletethis is one of my favorites as well, the entire first issue of menace is killer
ReplyDeleteI've got more good examples of horror / sci-fi stories lined up for the coming weeks too... I apologize to you science fiction fans, while I'm definitely more of a horror fan myself I do believe there's some good crossover stories to explore here as well.
ReplyDeleteWOW!,i'll admit when i first bought a ragged copy of MENACE#1 back in the '70's i was expecting a zombie story, boy was i shocked! but either way, when you think about dissapointing comic stories, its usually because the covers have fantastic elements not present in stories, you may not get your zombies, but you get your cadaverous two-headed fiends thats for sure!i even remember that Stan placed an order to buy a poster of the cover, man kids back then with unconcerned parents were lucky, its a great story too, with a plot used in the Googam era a lot,but better here!,thanks a lot for posting this, brings back memories, like i said before;MENACE never had a story i didn't like,i remember this one about a racist who tears his face up VERY well even today, and either way,its always nice to see Bill Everett at his peak, after this, well only his Dr. Strange comes close.
ReplyDeleteIf you have requests for any story in particular please forward the name and issue number to me and I'll see if I have it to scan for a future post. I'll even include a "reccomended by" credit to each post.
ReplyDeleteI knew the protagonist was an alien! No Homan would wait to put on an orange suit and an orange hat beye going up to the roof.... without a tie.
