The Old Mill Scream

The great Bob Powell really outdoes himself with this outstanding story from the August 1954 issue of Black Cat Mystery #51. With its implied sex, violence, and a disturbingly perverse motiff twist, this tale comes from the last actual BCM horror issue before Harvey started up with encore presentations of earlier issues and then into post-code westerns, mystics, and Black Cat heroine reprints.

  2. Gadzooks, what a great surprise that ended up with.

I would not have become tired of her. What would she have done then? I guess George would have ended up as the next dye in the flour.

  3. In the 50s, there were a lot of anti-VD films. I think they were going about it wrong, if you ask me, they should just have handed out this comic!

Think about it as a metaphor for VD! It actually works!

When I *first* saw the "red flour" I was thinking of a real-world involving pink grain! A few years ago the US sent an amount of seed grain to Turkey or some other Middle Eastern country; (whether because of famine or as general foreign aid I forget). Well; (in order to prevent predation by rodents or molding or something else in storage); this grain (which was only intended for planting *not human consumption* after all); was treated with some obviously powerful pesticides and dyed pink to show the fact!

Well some somehow got on "the Black Market"; and bought up or otherwise obtained by some poor folks who died from eating it! :(

Sung to the tune of Mountain's "Mississippi Queen", SFD?

    >I would not have become tired of her.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the guy's complaint was exactly. I mean, before he waltzed into a steady job and an easy piece of action he was a wandering hobo with nothing. I guess some guys just like to have their elbow room!

    Haha, good one!

So did anyone read the 2nd Scarlet O'Neil story over at my other blog? You know, it's okay to leave comments there if you did (hint!)
