Your Head for Mine

Tale #2 in our 3-Day look at The Best of Severed Heads this week… and if that’s not enough today also marks the start of our peek at the November 1952 issue of Journey into Fear #10 in its entirety. Yep, this issue is so massively bonkers it actually contains more than one decapitation-classic! Lucky you...

TOMORROW: More close shaves... reeeeal close…

"With a hip, clip and a clippity clop..." That must've been ONE powerful shotgun blast.

  2. Good morning, all. HEADS YOU LOSE, hunh?

Dig those single beds, 50s style, 1st panel page 4. Single beds all around in the 50s. Wouldn't want to offend anyone.

I find myself strangely ambivalent about today's artwork. It's pretty amateurish, in the main, but I'll admit to a weakness for cheesecake spread across several panels. It's a technique that never fails to impress.

Bottom page 5: why would this guy think going to the BASEMENT would be the best avenue of escape?

Page 6 is just a WTF laff-a-thon, every panel more bizarre than the last. Living proof that the writer drank steadily throughout the creation of this gem, and finished just before he passed out.

Headline in today's NY Post: "SHOE-ICIDE ATTACK!" By vart, I just had to tell someone.

Yes, Kars, things do thin out around the holidays. Soon, I'll be disappearing myself for a couple of weeks, but that just means I'll be getting a stocking full of stories on my return. Hope I don't get an overdose, swallowing all those tales at once while catching up.

I'm sure many others will be doing the same. THE SICKNESS SPREADS.

  3. Ah, the murdering wife :-)

But I have to give the writer some points for originality; at least she didn´t try to kill dumbo right at once.

Hunting accident, lol, always good to have an incompetent cop at hand. To declare this as a hunting accident you have to be blind und stupid.

And those sperated beds are always a lot of fun. Did they really existed for real or is this just an idiotic movie and comic myth? I know why they had to do this, but what did they think an unfaithful wife did with a lover? Screwing on the kitchen table?

This read like an EC tale without the EC art.

OOOO I LOVED THIS ONE AND FIND IT WEIRD THAT EVERYONE IS SUDDENLY DOWN ON THE ART WHEN USUALLY THE IGER SHOP STYLE BRINGS OUT THE OPPOSITE REACTION. THE LAST PAGE IS GREAT, SWAPPING SEVERED HEADS IS ALWAYS SUCH A CREEPY IDEA. I WONDER WHERE IT HAPPENED FIRST IN THE HISTORY OF HORROR?

  5. I just knew someone would comment on the double bed panel, I mean come on, don't you know how essential it is to keep a horrifically gory decaptitation story wholesome by not showing two adults sharing the same bed?

On a similar note, anyone want to see a foxy gal share a bed with a skeleton? Check out Kitty's blog today, but a quick WARNING too as it's definitely not work safe, unless your work is fine with you watching vintage vagina grind against a paper hand:

It's likely youtube will yank this clip soon so see it before it's gone!

  6. That headless corpse sure did one heck of a job speaking for himself without a mouth.

I was just talking about the separate beds thing the other night with someone. I think "All in the Family" was the first show to show a married couple sleeping in the same bed. I'm not sure.

  7. Wow... Sandy just might be the hottest pre-code horror vixen I've seen yet! I'd be pushin' dem beds together, like, every single night!

Not quite as hot as manual stimulation with Halloween decorations, but... Heh. Great artwork in this story -- Page 5 is absolutely stunning.

'We've got to get out of here, Charlie!'
    'The basement! Quick!'

Duh! This story was 'Stupidest Killers Weekend'-material for sure!

I agree that the art wasn't top-notch this time around, but somehow, it suited the tale quite nicely. The decapitation panel is gloriously gruesome without actually showing any blood.

  10. >anyone knows waht happened to absinthe´s blog Gloomy Sunday?

The League of Tana Tea Drinkers has tried contacting Absinthe to see what happened to not only her blog but her as well, with no response. Her friend Cindy over at Garnet Night has been posting on this for a few weeks now:

  12. Don't know which I find more amusing: Headless people (who manage to see/walk/function with closed-eyes head in crook of arm) or mobile attacking (and speaking) skeletons, lol.

Do these cartoonists know something medical doctors don't? ;-)

Such BOLD colors in these old comics.

  13. Thanks for mentioning that, Karswell; I just now revisited and noticed.
