Drive of Death

It’s the first official day of winter and that of course now means even more icy, snowy, extra treacherous, rugged road conditions. Or take for example the searing cold chill of death that our “hero” in today’s terror tale experiences while traveling his own self inflicted Highway to Hell.

From the September 1952 issue of Astonishing #17.

TOMORROW: Is it safe to google the words "pearl necklace?"

Silly as Rod's hallucinatory visions of the "ghostly" mist are, you really can't fault the image of a hit-and-run victim driving the car he was hit with and saying "going my way?" as not being 10 different flavors of creepy. In other words; "Thanks for the ROD, Lady".

Nice story, I have to wonder though why death would urge him to drive faster, seeing that they'll meet sooner or later anyway.

  3. That one was fun. I enjoyed the undead guy's "gotcha!" at the end. What a kidder, eh?

THE SECOND TO LAST PANEL ON PAGE 5 IS SUPER CREEPY TO ME FOR SOME REASON, THE DEAD GUY ACTUALLY LOOKS TERRIFYING SITTING THERE LAUGHING AT ROD. LOVE THE PANEL AT THE TOP OF PAGE 3 TOO AS THE GHOST BECOMES THE STAY PUFFED MARSHMALLOW MAN FOR A SECOND! BEAUTIFUL SPLASH TOO. GREAT ART ALL AROUND AND A COOL STORY ON A THEME THAT BEEN DONE COUNTLESS TIMES SINCE...... I NEVER GET TIRED OF THEMES LIKE THESE

  5. I agree with Anonymous (I think there are a few here on THOIA) about the amazing art and creepiness with this one. The Casper/Stay Puffed ghost was a little silly in it's final form, but the rest of the panels make up for it. An "astonishing" tale, indeed.

  6. our "hero" was an idiot anyway, dumping his OWN CAR into a lake with a body in it. so easy to trace if it was found. i mean, really, if i did dumb stuff like that, i'd have been caught long ago...

    ...oops!

I think this one was reprinted in the 70's in Crypt of Shadows or Vault of Evil maybe, I know I read it somewhere before. Love it!

  9. I'll take one! I'll wear it every time I vacuum, like my idol, June Cleaver!

    Oh, WARD!
