The Thing That Lived Again!

Oh how I have neglected my King! How is it possible that I have not posted a King Ward story since last May?! If you’re not familiar with this one of a kind artist then today you are in for a real tricky treat. One of my absolute favorite ACG artists of them all, his unique line style, odd cinematic angles, and brooding, moody atmosphere combine to make something truly otherworldly and freakishly frightening.

From the Sept. ‘51 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #23

FYI: I have four more horrifically terrific King Ward classics in my archives too! Click HERE for all of them--- if you haven't already done so!

EVERY panel--innuendo--rife with it---purple cloaks---awesome art and murders---get away,cat--nooo!aaaaaarrrrghhh!my face!!!!.(only joking)i loved this one,it was really well developed and stretched out(on the carpet)and i hate to sound like a pussy, but it genuinely scared meeeow,i found the woman in this story very catty however, but despite cat--i mean that it was still so scary i'm screaming like i'm on a hot tin roof,it's so loud my neighbors sent me to obedience school, but my brother Felix releashed me,oh well enough catterwalling,im gonna go get some lasagna with my friend Tom before the nip-pickers arrive and make a fe-line for my house and scratch my post.

  2. What a sad ending. That has to be the lamest protagonist I have seen in any comic book. I was rooting for anybody but him, since it was all his fault. He also appeared to have no life or identity outside enabling the witch.

Loved the evil witch cat - and I'm with Todd that this guy was pathetic. I think the cat may be evil but well I'll just do nothing and sit here and watch.

  4. Nice, complex tale. And the deathscenes were remarkably contemporary.

But the guy really hadn´t much of a life.

You are right, btw. Great art. Very atmospheric.

I am always amazed at the craft of these tales. Compared with todays writers those guys knew how to tell a story in a few pages.

  5. karswell, that's one of my favorite joys of coming to HoiA - discovering great comic book artists of the past!

King Ward - wow, great work and thanks for providing a past link to other posts containing his work.

WARDS STORIES ARE ALWAYS SO FULL OF AMAZING MOMENTS, IT FEELS LIKE EVERYTHING IN EVERY PANEL IS ALIVE AND AN ESSENTIAL PART TO TELLING THE TALE. GREAT STUFF AS USUAL, AND IT WAS COOL TO REVISIT HIS OTHER WORKS YOUVE POSTED TOO. DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST!

    ONE MORE DAY TILL HALLOWEEN!!!!

  7. I know I'm in for something amazing when the pages look THIS good in their thumbnail form. The story and the art are so full of excellence, it's an embarassment of spooky riches. The cat drawings are particularly kickass! Many thanks for a wonderful pre-H'ween treat :)

  8. Wicked Pussycat

Enter those eyes split back opals
    There within eros is manifest
Dark and light soul sworn to no one
Both it's your game and you know it

    I like you lots now
    I like you better
    Walking your catgirls
    In leashes and leather
I watch you curl up into a circle
    Symbol of eternity, wicked pussycat
    Five pointed star-tail...

Methinks that everyone should ease up on The Guy, like, hardcore! Somebody had to take the kitty home; somebody had to enable the Witch!!! Moreover, who goes for lonely rambles in the woods dressed in a dapper, green suit? A Man with a thoroughly checkered (and interesting) past, thass who!!!

Thanks for posting, Stephox! I enjoyed it almost as much as when I read it the first time.

Wishing you a truly diabolical Devil's Night!

  10. Fun story! I love that the cat is so much more stylized than anything/anyone else.
