Witch Woman

From the October 1952 issue of Journey into Unknown Worlds #13 stalks the final tale in our week-long look at Atlas Comics super fine Journey series, featuring gorgeous art, possibly by the great Carmine Infantino (anyone know for sure?) I challenge you to look at the splash panel and then try not to read this entire tale immediately.

And Happy Friday everyone, I hope you all had a great week… news on this weekend’s posts follows the story.

And whatever you do, don’t miss our Horror Crime Busters weekend starting tomorrow when Lance Storm returns for a no holds barred, knock-down-drag-out against --- The Nightmare Monster! And on Sunday Sergeant Spook finally materializes on the THOIA scene to kick the shit out of some ghosts in the old haunted orphan asylum. Fun stuff for the kooky kiddies currently trapped inside of all of you. See ya!

  1. "There are many ways to please a beautiful woman, but killing her is not one of them..."

aw c'mon, by the end of the story she's begging for it! kinky witch!

i'll leave it to others to plumb the psycho-sexual depths of this story- myself, i like to watch...

    Burn, Witch Burn certainly deserves
the DVD treatment, but personally i prefer Night/Curse of the Demon for British boofoolery.

COOL STORY, AND LOOKS LIKE INFANTINO TO ME. AND YOUR RIGHT THAT SPLASH IS WICKED, AND PROBABLY THE EBST PART OF THE ENTIRE STORY.

I NEVER SAW BURN WITCH BURN BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE AN UNDERATED GEM. THE VIDEOS ON AMAZON ARE GOING FOR RIDICULOUS PRICES!!

  6. You're right. One look at the splash page was enough to make me read the entire story.

    Pretty cruel ending too ...

  7. I see they've broken the standard motif of evil witch wife possession, finally--the fiancée is possessed instead! Take that, convention!

At first I was a little worried over just what in the world "witch's dairy" might be, but then I read it again and realized it said the "witch hunter's diary". Take that, convention!

Burn Witch Burn is one of the very, very best, and as everyone knows, should be available in a spotless restoration as befits our rich cinematic heritage. But take that, convention!

Before someone chimes in with an incest subtext about the story,i thought i'd put in my 2 cents.First,i love how even though Carol isn't evil she still feels "posessed",i'd say she was hexed rather than "controlled"(the fanatic's say that weird symptoms ARE signs of posession,so i could be wrong)but whatever, altering conventions is what these stories do best.Second,i love the art!Infantino was the man, sometimes i wonder what the 60's would have been like if he had drawn superheroes for Marvel using some of the twists he used for the DC. revival, like say updates of obscure Timely characters with sci-fi twists. As for BURN WITCH,BURN!,sure i'd second a petition, but only if DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS gets a release petition too!.

  9. Well, I was going to chime in with an incest subtext, but... Oh, fudgy darn, I'll do it anyway. Page 2, panels 3 and 4 seem to tell the story. Isn't he... uh... NUZZLING her in 3? And isn't she putting him off with "Let's not get maudlin..." while at the same time returning his embrace, in a classic Tease Moment which indicates either (1) that by leading him on and never giving in, she keeps him supporting her (and perhaps conducting her lesbian liaisons in secret while never having to marry in order to have a man to support her), OR (2) they've been doing the deed since they were five and six years old, respectively, and she wants to explore the house before they "anoint" it? And note the WHITE candle frozen in mid-DRIP, willya? Oh, you don't think I'm READING TOO MUCH INTO IT, DO YOU?

  10. I guess my favorite line is on page 2, panel 5: "Like the two kids they were, Lon and June spent the rest of the day poking into every nook and corner..."

And heaven forbid that Lon "blow a gasket" when Carol arrives.

Okay, enough sexual subtext... tomorrow Lance Storm returns, and Sunday it's Sergeant Spook to the rescue! Don't miss out.

What one really wants is a deal cut where every version of Conjure Wife is released in a set.

I'm with you, great movie! Great book too.

  13. Yeah, Lon & June are totally doing it. "No brother ever loved a sister more than I love you..."

    >Okay, enough sexual subtext

    No such thing!

  14. >Yeah, Lon & June are totally doing it

Their babies come with 35% less chromosomes!

  15. Okay, keep the sexual subtext cummin'...

  16. They're cummin' for you, Barbara!

  17. "Look at those books...every one of them about witchcraft, the supernatural! Such gay reading!"

Their ancestor was in the closet? What a kooky family!

  18. Well, that was a bait and switch. I had assumed at the start that the sister would be the one cursed, and was surprised at the introduction of the love interest, who, of course, then got possessed. But then we got back to the sister bring possessed after all. In any case, our hero doesn't have to worry about this - he's going away for Carol's murder, isn't he?
