The Pit and the Pendulum

Scattered throughout the month of May I’ll be posting Edgar Allan Poe stories as I’ve recently acquired some very cool pre-code submissions. Do I really need to include a Poe bio here for the uninitiated? Not bloody likely… so without further ado, here is your first trip into the haunted, subterranean nightmare regions of a truly disturbed mind, and one of Poe’s darkest, eeriest tales…

From the June 1952 issue of Beware #10

Look for another Poe terror tale coming next weekend!

  1. Boy, I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition! ;)

Great stuff--love the harrowed look on the protag's face, and what can you say about that splash? Awesome.

"May your stay be short and horrible!" Coincidentally, the new Motel 6 slogan.

VERY HYPED FOR THE POE POSTS BUT HAVE TO BE HONEST I'M NOT SUPER CRAZY ABOUT THE ARTWORK HERE, I THINK IT'S MOSTLY THE UGLY INAPPROPRIATE COLORING. WILDEY DEFINITELY HAS HAD BETTER MOMENTS BUT I WILL SAY THE STORY IS ADAPTED NICELY.

I agree it's not the best example of Doug's work but it's still a very good version of Poe's story.

    NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!

And for anyone needing another immediate Poe fix, take a trip back to August in my archive for The Black Cat:

  6. A fun post with a great splash page. But, I agree about the coloring problems. A little off-putting sometimes, but still a fun read.

My only real complaint would be:

"For interminable seconds I listened until there was a sullen splash from the foul-smelling depths below.

    'Bottomless! It is BOTTOMLESS!"

Um, perhaps we differ on the definition of 'bottomless'...

  11. 'Hey Torquemada, whattaya say?'
'I just got back from the auto de fe!'
'Auto de fe? What's an auto de fe?'
'It's what you oughtn't to do, but you do anyway!'

That movie is hit and miss (like all Brooks stuff that's not Young Frankenstein), but when it hits it REALLY hits!
