The Ghoul’s Revenge

Well, it’s getting closer to the end of the month which means I have to start thinking about how to kick off next month. I was going to make a habit of posting full issues at the start of each new month, and I actually delivered a few times, but as I’ve also mentioned before “a good full issue is a rarity.” So tell me what you want to see come June 1st, an entire issue, or maybe an artist or publisher spotlight, or maybe a theme like “killer plants,” "hot vampires," “shrunken heads” …whatever yooz want, let’s vote. In the meantime it’s--- The Ghoul’s Revenge!!
From the Dec-Jan ‘52/53 issue of Out of the Night #6

  1. I would like to see a week of stories where the endings least correspond to horror clichés. You spoil us with a tale a day, and for that you are awesome, but are there still five you think will surprise even the likes of us?

If not, then rah rah vampires and werewolves.

  2. I dunno, I'm kinda down with a "theme week". Maybe combine something like that with what Todd said above about least cliched horror endings. That could be interesting to do...I'll probably pass out with joy no matter what you do, I might be biased.

  3. At the risk of admitting a guilty pleasure, how about women flashing a little leg as a theme for one week? It is, after all, one of the hallmarks of pre-code horror.

I found it hilarious that the victim in your "Voices Of The Dead" installment (May 19th) chose to wear nylons and high heels just to climb into an open grave in a cemetery.

  4. "In a moment of SHEER TERROR...in a surge of PURE HORROR!"

Wow, what a wild, action-packed tale! LOVE this one! The half-skeleton transformations are gruesome and horrifying, and the twist of good ol' Uncle Otto going ghosty to fight bad Seth--classic!

Man, the families we run into as we go through Karswell's library. I bet Christmas with the Canfields was always a hoot: "You ate the last of the Figgy Pudding? I SHALL HAVE MY VENGEANCE FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE AS I MAKE FRUITCAKE FROM YOUR DESECRATED CORPSE! Oh, wait, there's another one in the oven. Never mind..."

As for a theme week, I second the "cheesecake" motion--and if there are hot vampires to go along with that, so much the better for me!

THE DEMONS FROM THE NETHERWORLD LOOK MORE LIKE ALIENS FROM OUTER SPACE BUT I SECOND THE VICAR, GHOULS REVENGE IS GREAT! IM STARTING TO GET FAMILIAR WITH HARRY LAZARUS ART NOW, HES ONE OF MY CRRENT FAVES AT ACG.

HOT CHEESECAKE OF THE NON-CLICHE TYPE WEEK SOUNDS GOOD TO ME TOO! VA-VOOM!

Wow! What a great story! Now, that was grawesome.

Roy seems to have a little trouble connecting the dots, though. "Don't be ridiculous. He can't hurt us; he's dead ... oh, except he ruined all his relatives through his evil supernatural powers."

The artwork of people being turned into skeletons was awesome. Half-skeletons are the scary kind.

or maybe a theme like “killer plants,” "hot vampires," “shrunken heads”

Those all sound good to me. How about plants that shrink the heads of killer vampire babes?

Turning people into skeletons at a touch,my god that'd be a useful power at my family reunions, and you can just TELL he'd been wanting to do that for years.as for suggestions;i have several that start with D's that automatically make for great horror: 1)Decapitations.(and plenty of). 2)Dungeons(slimy preferrably). 3)D-cups(on vampire babes,or any females, monsters or otherwise for that matter.). 4)Demons(always fun). 5)Disfigurement(just so long as the victim isn't TOO sympathetic). 6)Dick Miller(well, roles he would have played). would love to see some Frankenstein and abusive parent comeuppance stories too.

Alex Toth's birthday is June 25th, so why not a week of Toth horror? He may have only done 7 pre-code horror stories (and I know you've published at least one) but hey...

  12. This just goes to show: To heir is human, but to forgive is divine!

  13. Wow, lots of fantastic suggestions. So far the tally seems to lean towards leggy cheesecake so get your votes in if you, uh... lean more towards a different female body part.

And there will definitely be a tribute to Alex Toth next month, as well as two other legends--- guaranteed!

I'd like to see a few more full issues myself. I like the total experience of a couple of heavy hitters mixed in with some really bad stories?(which have a certain charm themselves). and of course the ads!

as to themes, I'm down for reptillian menace, whether mutated monsters or grisly alligator death!

thank you so much for this amazing site!

  16. Hey, thanks for adding me to your list of links! I appreciate it, and I've added your site to mine now. Since it;s so new, I'm building the links area up a day at a time.

Thanks for sharing the story, it was neat seeing the way they turned into skeletons from one side to the other. I see your point about it's relation to the "Skin and Bones Syndrome."

The way the uncle sacrificed himself to fight another ghost reminded me of the similar situation in the movie "The Frighteners."
