The Tarantula!

Today I have two creepy tales from the January 1953 issue of Adventures into Terror #15… and to start things off here’s one of the creepiest from Hy Rosen. Make sure you check out the cover art for this issue over at the Atlas page too.

WOW, THIS ONE IS ALSO IN THE SAME VAULT REPRINT. I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS UNTIL NOW BUT DID MARVEL SOMETIMES JUST REPRINT AN ENTIRE PRE CODE ISSUE IN THESE SILVER AGE COMICS?

Weird how the final panel is both ridiculous and chilling at the same time.

And you are right, the Maneely cover on this issue is outstanding.

I don't think so, I can't remeber off hand of a straight full pre-code issue reprint... I think they usually mixed it up a little from a variety of golden age series. I could be wrong though.

    >Now vampire...tarantulas?

    Nope. GIANT TALKING vampire tarantulas.

Y'know i actually think the image of a spider with a human head can can be disturbing if handled correctly, remember that scene in Carpenter's THE THING?,not the same but still...

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Good point.

  9. "The vampire tarantulas gorge themselves on human flesh and then leave!"

As soon as I read that, I was in love. :)

Lots of wonderful stuff--the "living dead victims" are very creepy, the grave-robbing subplot is nice (dig that ghoul's crazy outfit at the top of page 4! Earmuffs and a checkered flag patch!), and that last panel on page 4 is very nice and chilling, lets you know that the story is turning RIGHT THERE. And then, of course, just the whole idea of it...

    >>Sometimes weirder is better...

I think you meant to say "ALWAYS." :)
