Frankenstein and the Mummies

Nope, it’s not déjà vu, it’s Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein, and he's back for another shot at those crummy mummies! But something’s different you say? Yes indeed. This is Briefer’s early version of the Monster of Frankenstein, before he sliced away all the silly kid’s stuff and added in all the limb rippings ‘n skull pulverizings. Need I ask which you prefer? Let’s take a vote…

Originally presented in the July 1946 issue of Frankenstein #3

think I prefer the later version better but this early kiddy stuff is still fun.....mostly I'm glad that his nose is where it's supposed to be

  3. judging from their drink requests on page 6, there must have been some decent New York-style delis in ancient Egypt.

  4. I prefer the later, more horror oriented Frankenstein stories too, but the earlier cartoony stuff has a lot to teach as far as clean, stylized character design, efficent writing / story structure / composition, and how to basically just create an enjoyable "all ages" read out of horror material... something alot of current cartoonists can learn from.

Not as funny as some of Briefer's other stories, like the one where the monster tries to join the vampire union or liscenses his own cereal, but still up to John K.'s standards over "what makes a good cartoon".i DO prefer the later horror series though, the monster as a wandering anti-hero/vicious killer is the direction universal should've taken rather than having the monster get revived by some fan or descendant of the baron all the time to fight 4 drunken comedians.

  11. I like 'em both. The earlier, horror-oriented post, was a better story, but this was enjoyable. Downright cute, is what it was.

The humorouns Frankenstein gets my vote. Though all three incarnations are good. Yup, there were really 3.

First incarnation: supervillain / monster with detective / superhero arch enemy. 2nd incarnation: humor. 3rd incarnation: horror. I actually like all 3, but feel that the most original and exciting work was done for #2. And it was Briefer's favorite too! (I read it in one of those TwoMOrrow type magazines.)
