The Lovely Little Lady with the Sea-Green Tail!

I've been revisiting one of my favorite old 60's TV series lately, CLICK Voyage to the Bottom of Sea, and this episode in particular featuring a lovely mermaid and her angry mate reminded me of a very similar tale from the April 1979 issue of House of Mystery #267. So kick off those vacation shoes for a pair of flippers, we're treadin' in some dangerous waters as we get July 2023 rollin' out on a weird "...wave of mutilation..."

  1. Muv does not have a shark tail, then? Just legs?

  2. I don't know why but that *heh* splash page (get it?) of Whitley holding the unconscious body of the mermaid reminds me far too much of the ending of "What's Opera Doc?" as a sobbing Elmer carries off Bugs' "dead" body into the sunset. Sucee is cute and I totally understand how Muv feels about humans.

  3. I feel like it took a little chutzpah to color most of that mermaid's tail orange on the cover. I have a special place in my heart for chutzpah! I may have mentioned this before, but I also have a special place in my heart for artistic representations of mermaids that are clearly depicted as having knees. I mean, it's like building a fourth wall only to break it: Tonight's real mermaid played by a lady in costume! Might was well go on and draw a zipper up the backside of her sea-green shark boyfriend.

  4. First post in a long time I'm not a super fan of, the pacing is kind of weird and the paneling is strange for no reason. Still fun to read, though!

That said, there's good art here, the good girl mermaid, bright oranges and greens, and the kraken boyfriend. I like that there's a callback to the host at the beginning with the octopus legs and then again at the end with his "date."

  5. People often criticize JAWS for being full of really bad science about sharks, and I'm sure they're absolutely right. So a term like "Killer Shark Family" immediately reminded me of that.
