The Horror of it All?

NEWS: I've received quite a few private messages through Facebook and Instagram congratulating me on my new podcast with Fangoria. I have to say, it is indeed an honor to see my blog (now in its 13th year) associated with a magazine that I've loved and collected since I was 11 years old. I mean, I can actually remember seeing Fangoria #1 right there on the newsstand in '79! Yes, over the years I've learned a lot about the horror films I've cherished most, and one other huge medal of honor that I will forever wear proudly on my jacket came the day my comic book series, HAUNTED HORROR, actually received a rockin' review courtesy of Fango editor, Svetlana Fedotov. Fangoria is certainly an important magazine to the genre that we horror fiends all dig the best-- there is just one small problem though....

I have absolutely nothing to do with this podcast.

Anyway, best of luck to them. I do hope my blog name helps with their hits, just as I hope random google searches for their podcast brings new visitors over here to THOIA.

And that's about all I'm ever going to say about any of this... seriously.

  1. This is truly unfortunate. You do have one advantage, you are "horrors" so any mistype will instantly bring you to this site.

I recommend that all your fans, and we are a lively bunch that loves and appreciates what you do, just talk about your blog. I tend to repost panels (ALWAYS GIVE ATTRIBUTION FOLKS!) on my SM. Does it help? I hope so, but even if I'm not driving some traffic to the site I'm helping to raise the page rank because links to the site exist in more places.

Sorry, Karswell. I've had similar things happen to me in some of my projects.

Most important fact: Your logo is 1000x better!

  2. It's so strange. I mean, I understand that the term your title is taken from is a common turn of phrase--or was in the fifties--and pops up here and there because of it. But surely Fangoria can muster enough creativity to craft a hundred other titles that aren't already associated with something current. And it isn't as if you aren't on their radar, you know? Like you, I started reading the print magazine very early--and their sister mag Starlog even before that--and hold Fangoria in high esteem. Usually I would assume something like this was purely coincidental, but that's just not possible this time. Here it just seems like they a plundering the very community they are supposed to be serving as a tastemaker.

Also, their masthead is utter crap. It looks like the appetizer menu down at the frat sports bar. Hire a professional, sheesh.

  3. Thanks for the comments and support you guys, it's really appreciated. I've been going somewhat back and forth about all of this, with friends and followers mostly saying what you guys have already said here, but there are others who don't see it as that big a deal. I've sort of been following what this new podcast is doing on social media in prep for their actual launch on the 13th, and so far their idea to build interest in the show has been to come up with lame choose what's better between the Halloween or Friday the 13th franchises, (seriously?), and yesterday they even asked their followers to address whether the original Alien film is boring or not. Edgy garbage for Hot Topic 12 year olds. Of course they pissed off like 99% of the people commenting.

I seriously don't like my blog name associated with space wasting shit like this.

  4. That sort of social media profile raising does sound appalling. However, I think the graciousness you've shown in this post is laudible. Wishing the podcast well and moving on is the simple best approach you could take to it. I've been reading your blog for years and will continue to do so for as long as you post. I don't think I will ever tune into their podcast, even though I have nothing but respect for Fangoria.

  6. If you were 11 in 79,
you probably bought Famous Monsters of Filmland?
I used to buy every issue.
    I loved that magazine.
AT a certain point the magazine ran out of steam and turned more towards Star Wars.
Anyway, I unfortunately threw my collection away at some time in my teens.
All the Mads and Crackeds went somewhere too.
I didn't understand that I would want to see it later.
Do you think you'd ever post Famous Monsters of Filmland?

  7. Don't sweat it, Mr. K!! As we all know-- when the big heartless company screws over a smaller, humbler entity there's ALWAYS a gory and fitting justice dealt out in the last panel. CHOKE! GOOD LORD!!
