I don't know about you, but pouring human blood on anything to achieve something in return typically just seems like it's gonna be a bad idea. Case in point: today's saturated scare-o-rama illustrated by Rocco Mastroserio from the May 1953 issue of The Unseen #10. And you, dear lady, might I add-- are no Indiana Jones! I've also rounded out today's rollickin' sadventure with a haunted one page quickie, also by Rocco.
+++++++++++++++++BOO-ONUS!
I like the Milton Caniff inspired art. I also love how an ancient idol knows about airplanes and ticket prices. I hope she got good rates.
ReplyDeleteOh this one is hilarious. I accidentally skipped the third page when reading so when I saw the panel where Mrs. Tebble immediately kills her husband, I was like "Well, that escalated quickly!" Then I read the page I skipped--"Well, that still escalated quickly!" Mr. Tebble doesn't even get to scream, we don't even get to see his wife do it it's just a simple "Yes,dear" then in the next panel, he's lying on the floor dead.
ReplyDeleteI also love that the blood has to be human in order for the idol to give "human wisdom" so to speak.
I also laughed a bit too hard at the third panel on page 3 due to the "flying" stewardess!
The last two panels on page three, a precursor of Hellraiser?
ReplyDeleteRocco Mastroserio doing one of my favorite art styles. I just love the pitted and oxidized looking textures everywhere. The figure drawing and character work is so dead-on that the many wordless panels (the third panel of page one, the last panel of two, the first one four) can do all the work of establishing the crimey mood here without letting the plot slow down one whit. The colors are quite beautiful in this one too. Many of these images would have been perfectly at home on the cover.
ReplyDeleteNot that I'd want to replace the actual cover, mind you. That Jack Katz mummy is totally badass.

ReplyDeleteI love this one for the unique reason that the idol was not attempting to fool her nor curse her. It's was completely honest with her, and its her fault for missing the obvious -- collect blood from all the crash victims and take it with her.
ReplyDeleteThat said, she had no way of carrying the gold out OR getting that much of it back to civilization. That stuff is heavy, you know!
I love the art in this. It's clean, it's well done, and the coloring is perfect, usually a sore point for me. I like look of the idol, and the look of the temple. Very nice work.
Lovely splash, and I agree on the cover. Terrific art with great colors and expressive expressions. It turns so sinister. "Come to bed dear" super noir feel. This is horror! Really enjoyed today's post but the ending is only so-so. Thank you Mr. K. That one pager is so sure of itself. Who documented these episodes? Huh?

ReplyDeleteMestiere--I gathered that the idol's promise was to lead Mrs. Tebble to some treasure. It becomes quiet afterwards because it fulfilled its promise--or so I gathered. Advice on how to get out of the ruins was going to cost her extra, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure the idol caused the plane to crash as well
ReplyDeleteAnd FYI, that Jack Katz mummy cover is not only featured in the cover gallery of my MUMMIES book, it also graces the back cover!
ReplyDeleteThe "Come to bed, dear" part makes me think of Joan Collins and Michael Jayston in TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS, except that in that story the husband isn't the one the wife is out to murder.
