Buried Alive! or, Dig That Crazy Body!
Of all the nutty tales I've posted at this blog over the years, this one from the July 1954 issue of Nuts #3 has got to be the most--well, --nuts! Over the top, super funny writing, and hilarious artwork full of sight gags and Mad For Your Money moments, yes sir, they don't quite make 'em like this anymore. Enjoy! :)

ReplyDeleteGotta love the panel where the "corpse" rises out of the coffin during the funeral only for one of the pallbearers to whack him on the head with a giant mallet.
Definitely in the style of early Mad.
ReplyDeleteNeat story. I really kind of want to follow the further adventures of Chauncy and Oliver, the star-crossed resurrectionists. And I love the visual of the party-goers fleeing from every window at the bottom of page five. Rats leaving a sinking ship. But my favorite thing here is that rug giving everyone side-eye in the splash. I was already laughing before the story even started proper.
ReplyDeleteSo much here. Overload indeed! Grynarrghan argh chug chug chug. That monkey! The wig and toupee flipping is fun too. At first I wondered why is that handkerchief on top of his head? The coffin expansion. Oh yeah, Gnnarrrrasharrrga! Gnyaa! I say, Gnyaaaaaaahhh!! You have to love classical literature. Thank you so much Mr. K. This was an enjoyable romp.
ReplyDeleteBest running gag: the rat that shows up page 3. Dressed up as a solider when they wheel the canon in, gets blasted full of holes, playing cards in a cage, counting money, etc.

Do you have any issues of Riot?
I know you have some stories posted. It seems like it was a horror/Mad-like comic.
Joe Maneely was really good at the Kurtzman inspired drawing style!
It's nice that it throws in the hot female vampire cliche. What's also funny is that except for the wings she's dressed in regular skimpy clothes (like in a "cheesecake" picture) instead of vampire clothes.
ReplyDeleteToo bad Uncle Quagmire was only in this one comic, he could have gone on to be a comic horror host along with the likes of Uncle Creepy or Cain and Able. Uncle Quagmire had the look and (pardon the expression) deadpan humor that all horror host possess.
