MUMMIES COMING DEC 6th!!!
IDW unraveled a new release date for my MUMMIES book, and it's this week-- December 6th in fact! Available in finer shops everywhere this Wednesday, and of course online too (HERE!), this book is a little different in format than the previous larger sized hardcovers in our Chilling Archives series-- it's about the same size dimensionally as a comic book and it's also softcover / square bound, but it's over 120 pages of scary, shambling, mummy shenanigans! Now in today's post, I have a couple of eerie examples of what you can find in said collection: Albert Tyler's "The Mummy's Bride" originally from the July '53 issue of Beware #16, as well as a spooky one-page short from Jay Disbrow called "The Mummy's Hand", first presented in the Sept '53 issue of Ghostly Weird Stories #120 (with both stories appearing here at THOIA for the very first time too!)

I'm not too sure about Tyler's artwork here, something strikes me a bit wrong, though he's done a lot of interesting work in the archives, a lot of it I really liked. He seems to have a bit of a problem with female faces; our young daughter doesn't look to young in a number of panels. That said, he's get the sexy nightgown body great (a requirement in pre-code!) and his mummies are cool and creepy, and the splash is awesome. I'm of two minds with the art!
ReplyDeleteOverwrought narration and a bit different resolution and we've got a pretty good mummy story.
The Mummy's Hand on the other ... hand ... is a bit meh.

ReplyDeleteThat's the kind of line (when it's addressed to a WOMAN) that people are told never to expect in a FIFTIES horror story!
I wonder if "Ivan Sanders" is an inside joke, since there was a famous scientist named Ivan Sanderson. He was also a paranormal writer, so putting that name in a story about a mummy's curse could've been part of the joke.
Neat double splash page here. I don't know that I've seen that very often.
ReplyDeleteI also found the art in this one to be, ah, mercurial. Pages two and three are pretty awkward. But the first and fourth pages are really marvelous. I love the way this dude draws mummies for sure. All those bandages are like medical tape!
Nice that the book is finally here just in time for gift card season!
