Another good one from Dread of Night #1 (see previous post for more details), this one highlighted by Gray Morrow inks and a story that somehow seems a fitting match for Brian Barnes' birthday today, haha!
And yes, I have a giant female spider, but that's not my familiar, I am just ... familiar with it. Being my birthday, today I got to pick how familiar! So not at all like this story! Not even close!
The art on this is really good, and the story is fun though an easy guess. This is certainly early-period Warren level. It's too bad these didn't last longer, this is really good stuff. Call Yoe, these issue could fit into a single volume :)
Let's see, a failure of a sorcerer in disheveled robes abusing his faithful cat while living in a dump and wishing for greater power he'll never attain. Yeah, John Culver is basically Gargamel from the Smurfs. That last line from our host is ingenious!
First off, Happy Birthday Brian! Many happy returns!
I really liked this tale, well drawn, well written, well told. This story could go in many different directions, such as the power is John Culvers, but he and his familiar must change places (the familiar turns into a sexy witch while john turns into a rat, how fitting) and John only gets to be human for one week a decade.
These stories so far are a fun read, maybe they are B horror movie material or a Night Gallery type twist ending tale, but they are a lot of fun.
I just can't escape my birthday, can I?
