In stores this week-- ugh!-- HAUNTED HORROR #28 creeps into comic shops on the 28th with a toxic dose of ghastly grim tales to leave you glowing and blowing chunks! Guest issue host, Toxic Tommy, picks a few so-called "classics" from the dreariest sludge drench of all, and today THOIA has two FULL STORY previews to curdle your sour lil stomaches into submission! Pick up HH#28 for even more tales of ghosts, blood suckers, catastrophic experiments, etc! FYI: Todays tales originally appeared in Chamber of Chills #6 (March '52), and Mysteries Weird and Strange #3 (Sept '53.)
WOW.....Talk about zero sum morality..... in both these tales....
ReplyDeleteI'll be picking this up today at my LCS (where I have it on my pull list, and I urge everybody that loves it to do the same, it helps gauge interest) so I'll read these stories in dead tree format.
ReplyDeleteI'll just use this comment to thank Karswell and Yoe for all the hard work it takes to produce this book!
Wow, that second story is grim! One of the blackest last panels I've seen in a while. On the plus side, I sure did like the prolonged grisly scenes of him stumbling around all ripped apart and shocking people.
ReplyDeleteI liked the potential of the first story, but it was so short and simple and undeveloped that I ended up unsatisfied. It could have been really interesting as a revenge story with some really nasty hazing stunts by the frat brothers on the pledge leading up to the ritual, and then the frat goes mad (or is possessed) and murders them all. I wish that there were some colleges around today where the frat brothers all wear bow ties and v-neck sweaters -- that's just extra creepy.
With respect to Toxic Tommy, nobody picks stories better than Karswell!

ReplyDeleteI like the speedy brutality of The Black Knights of Evil, the kind of one-punchline anthology quickie that rises or falls simply on how fast the story can go too far. Flipping the third page to see the loin-clothed horned-skull man club everyone to death in the space of two panels is a short and effective shock.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, this fish story is dazzlingly, lingeringly bleak. I'd like to see a new ending, in which Hank and his new girlfriend also succumb to suicidal despondency after the events of the tale. Maybe one more page, where the ER docs give in to feelings of professional failure, where that cop and household staffer are shattered by having stood idly by. Where the very fish float to the top of the tank in abject depression. Lars Von Trier's The Avenging Corpse.
The shortness of the first story reminds me of those one-page paranormal stories that horror comics are so full of. All that's missing is reading that it's based loosely on a true story.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment, Morbid! And thanks again to everyone who comments here as well as those that buy Haunted Horror! If you're not following my HH group on Facebook you're missing out on all the latest news and updates... stay tombed for lots more!!
