The Absent Minded Fiend

While in Orlando last week for Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights, I picked up a coverless, though very nicely priced, copy of the April 1952 issue of Mysterious Adventures #7 (thank you Colosseum of Comics!) This gem of an issue contains all sorts of insanity and violence, and I do believe we'll be taking a look at the entire issue throughout this great halloweeny month of October! So hang onto your various body parts, kids, cuz for the next four posts we'll be gagging on tales about cannibals, zombies, ghost pirates, and deadly tattoos!

  1. This is a messed up story that never really made much sense to me. Obviously Patty is obsessed with cannibalism and that forbidden drink must have done something to cause her to wander around robbing graves at night, yet nothing is really explained--and the body parts simply come from corpses from graves rather than live people being murdered and dismembered. Yet we never know for certain if Patty is actually eating the people or simply leaving body parts all over the house to snack on later. We also don't know why Patty has no idea of what she's been constantly doing. Louis might, but he fell out the window to his death before he could give anyone an explanation.

If you're planning to do this entire issue--I can't wait to fully read the one with the Tattooed Man--I've only skimmed it, and I know from the illustrations that it's going to be one messed up ride.

  2. "Well, the captain warned us not to come here and drink voodoo potions and blah, blah, blah, but I wasn't really listening and you're not listening to me now." Ain't that the way? I'm surprise they even allow New Yorkers access to secret native rituals anymore. They'll drink anything.

Loved it! More stories need to be about chicks obcessed [sic] with cannibalism. I hate that your copy of this book is sans the wonderful cover, but I kind of hope that its original owner, driven to adolescent criminal pathology by the contents, ate it right off the comic in some psychotic break.

    Looking forward to more.

  4. "..that all started when Louis and I were on our honeymoon...cannibalism had always attracted me.."

S/W/F - enjoys quiet evenings, travel, cannibalism & dirt indentification. n/s please.

I like the l'il skull that shows up throughout.

  5. The art's complete amateur and the script is a fever dream of a entity created in a fever dream, and it's all the better for it! It's like those old 70s lurid NY sleaze paper; makes little sense but just bouncing along from dismembered hand to dismembered foot.

The skeleton on the splash made me giggle.

I am really looking forward to the rest of this. We've got Cameron coming up, so there's obviously going to be a huge improvement in the art (I'm guessing) and hopefully the writing will still be as insane.

  6. Like Mestiere, I imagined a "Gaslight" story with Louis being behind it all (even if Patty's suspicions in that direction seem to give it all away in that case).

What's funny is that this very unconventional wife (and she'd be one even if it WEREN'T for the all-out horror stuff) is named Patty Nixon. Pretty soon "Pat Nixon" would become almost a nickname for an "aggressively normal" kind of wife.
