The Legend of Rose Hall

What's the shivery secret behind the tortures, black magic, and murderous legend of Rose Hall's very own evil witch, Annie Palmer? Try not to die of fright as this tale of ultimate terror unfolds to the last screaming, supernatural panel!! From Menace #166.

And when I say Menace #166, I of course meant Dennis the Menace Bonus Magazine Series #166. APRIL FOOLS, ya'll!!!

(FYI: A true THOIA horror tale coming up tomorrow)

  2. That was a cute joke. Still a pretty creepy story to be in a Dennis the Menace comic book of all things.

Well, that's unexpectedly dramatic for Dennis the Menace.

  4. Karswell, why you .... !!!!

I had to look this one up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Witch_of_Rose_Hall

I like the scratchy cartoonish art here, it actually works pretty well.

Notice the one change to the legend; the legend (at least by Wikipedia, take it with a grain of salt) not only says a slave killed her, but gives the slave's name. In this, we hear that "the slaves wanted to kill her" but then it's left open ended. That's can't be a coincidence. I'm not calling racism here, but it's a weird change.

Hey, Dennis "everyday is Halloween" isn't very menacing. Step up your game!

  5. Nice one. When you didn't link "Menace #166" in the introductory paragraph--and when it was a title I was unfamiliar with, natch--I went looking for it. Kind of awesomely, Google returned the right answer, but it still took me a minute to realize that. Good one! I should have read the story first!

Honestly, the art should have been a dead giveaway. I mean the style, sure, obvious seventies Dennis. But also the paneling is really interesting. And all that white. It's amazing how distinct precode horror comics look, even from a distance. It's a nearly impossible look to duplicate; even with the wide range of talent that contributed to the authentic things, nobody's ever quite managed to do a completely convincing impression. At least none that I know of. If anyone can dig up a good, faithful fake, I'd love to see it.

Film noir's the same way. People throw the term around a lot, but that's meaningless. There has been nothing convincingly noir since, say, nineteen sixty.

  6. We had read about this evil woman back as a Kid...
enjoyable post (heard that one to three slaves "did her in") Killer depends upon which "account" you read.

  7. Thanks to everyone for not wanting to kill me-- I guess it occurred to me that other than me mentioning possibly posting a Cheesaurus Rex comic one time, that I've hardly never taken advantage of April Fools Day here at THOIA. So there ya go ;) hope everyone enjoyed my little wank of whimsey.

NEXT UP: HAUNTED LOVE #3-- plus a TOMB FOR 2!
