Murder! / The Dictator!

The remaining two tales from the July 1954 issue of Marvel Tales #125 finish off this great collection. Check the THOIA Archives for Where Monsters Prowl, The Unwanted, and The Horror House.

  1. I've read more than one tale where the dead literally "take it with them." Was this an actuality at one point in time (sans Egyptian Kings, et al) or merely a naive plot device of comic book writers? Hmmmmmmmm.

As for the Dictator, now that he was exposed, shouldn't EVERYONE die from disbelief?? Hmmmmmmmmm.

Thanks, Karswell. Two more stories that make me go hmmmmmmmm.

  2. Sometimes I really hate the internet -- it gives us great sites like this -- but it also means that I can't look at the Marvel Tales cover without immediately thinking of something else ... (sorry!)

More great Atlas stuff. Second to last panel on "Murder!" is incredible, and the artist gives a great job of making our bad guys look more and more beaten down. The story is fun, the ending is good, and it does a great build of suspense.

The ending of "The Dictator!" is telegraphed pretty badly, but the story is fun and it avoids the normal "all people under a dictator secretly hate him" trope Marvel trafficked in a lot in the 60s. I love how haughty the generals looked in the first panel.

  3. I've always wondered about this earthy brownish tone Atlas seemed to use so much. Is it just old orange, or yellowed paper, or were they really coloring so many of their stories in russet autumn hues? I really love it either way.

  4. The brownish tone is me being lazy and not adjusting the contrast... if you guys like the scans more brownish then I'll just leave it as is, saves me alot of time when editing posts. I like it either way, especially like this when it comes to print-- on a computer screen I think it looks better a little adjusted and whiter... that's just my personal taste.

  5. Nah, I think upping the contrast causes more trouble than it fixes (as long as the scans aren't bright yellow or something). Like I say, I really like this look. Still, I am interested in how these look to the naked eye. Orange?

  6. They look faded and murky after scanning... I've been bumping up with contrast and brightening the scans since I first started this blog. Now, due to time constraints, I'm just doing quick and very minor adjustments.

  7. Two more Atlas gems that were slowly savored since the artwork deserves time spent looking at all of the fine detail. "Murder!" was the superior of the two in both art and story. I figured "The Dictator" would end as a psychological trick where only a placebo was given and the dictator would end up going mad or something.

Looking forward to seeing what's next on the horizon for the double features. I would normally suggest Harvey after Atlas, but I'm selfishly wanting to save those stories for when I get to them in the fantastic reprint books that have been coming out.

How about Key-Gilmore? I'm happy with anything, of course; the only thing I never really dig is the Purple Claw stuff that pops up now and then. But I'm certainly not complaining--I live for THOIA!

    Thanks Karswell!
