DOOMSDAY!

Well, this is it, friends... the last THOIA post ever. Obviously, in a few days we'll all be dead (thanks again for the heads up, Mayans!) so I thought I'd get a jump on the Final Days festivities by posting this appropriately titled / requested tale from the October 1952 issue of Black Cat Mystery #40. Yes boys and ghouls, it's been fun, it's been real, awww Hell-- it's been REAL fun-- eternal hugs and kisses, and I hope to see you all soon as either ghosts, devils, zombies, worms, or whatever it is that surely awaits us on the ominous other side.

Your pal in doom and damnation, Mr. Karswell...

THE END... or is it?

  1. I imagine things won't be too different. I'll be reading your repugnant posts on the other side as well.

  2. If I have to go, I hope it's death-by-rad-monster like in the story!!

    Thanks for everything!!!

  3. This thing is all shades of goofy. Why warn humans? Where'd he get the transmission equipment? Why the loincloth? Why the Rampage cosplay page 4/panel 6? Why does every monster have to use "puny humans?"

And a monster the size of a small building has billions of people building homes in him?

There was another story with this exact same plot except the creature was a giant worm. One had to influence the other, I don't want to imagine a world where two people thought that was a good idea twice (though, none of us will have to live in that world soon!)

  4. It's my son's second birthday on the 21st so it's poor timing.
But Brian- what about the fact this thing has amazing teeth but eats humans whole; where's the enjoyment in savouring your food? And does it not have any digestive acids?

  6. Are all humans living inside the monster? What the....?!

And on page 4 is that some dude accidentally surfing the shoulder of the beast? Haha!

But the biggest scare was the half second where I thought you were serious about this being the final posting. Aiiiieee!!

  7. Holy cow! Grrrreat story! Yes, it was in all probability influenced by the "Thing" story "the Worm", and in several panels, notably page two, the art looks extremely Ditko-esque. Perhaps this is an adaptive tease for the quick-witted readers who might come to see the parallels?....

It is also prescient of the Atlas giant monster tales which would follow only a handful of years from the date of this story. Surely, Stan Lee must have noticed this type of tale and could have seen the possibilities!

But let's not harshly critique this one, especially the last panel (actually, I love these unexpected endings, non sequitur notwithstanding!). This tale is for me a definitely delivered dose of ars gratia artis! Many, many thanks!

  10. Chew your food, children.

I waited till the last possible couple of hours to read this. The wind storms are already kicking up outside. I always wondered what giant, carnivorous underground Mayans actually looked like, and I'm glad to have that cleared up for me--even in the eleventh hour. As if it matters, I really liked the art, especially those panels in the crackpot scientist's basement labooratory. Rest in peace, everybody!

  11. Karswell: Here's hoping the Mayan's got it wrong. I was really looking forward to more great posts from THOIA after Doomsday. Merry Christmas and thanks for a great year of horror reading.

  12. You scared me--I thought you were going to quit blogging! Doomsday doesn't scare me, but that did.

  13. Didn't mean to scare anybody with that last post, heck, I thought the end of the world was probably scary enough! Ahhh well... there's always NEXT APOCALYPSE.

And a great set of comments, gang... this one will absolutely go down in the THOIA history books as a winner. More Harvey numbskullery up next too!
