The cool Carl Burgos cover art from the January 1955 issue of Mystery Tales #25 got itself a demonic 70's make-over on the January 1974 issue of Beware #6, inside reprinting Ed Winiarski's spooky tale "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall!" There's lots more vintage horror about mirrors in the THOIA Archive, just use the handy search engine, keyword: mirror!
Terrific little spooky story here! The remake cover was interesting to see. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteAnother good one! One great thing about the redrawn cover is the inclusion (far right) of the "castle-like" stone work. It went from a modern day curio shop to some kind of ... castle curio shop :)
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a Night Gallery story of how some mean landlady is shown a picture of prehistoric times and the landlady's dog runs into the picture. The landlady goes after her dog, only to come face to face with a tyrannasaurus, she flees from the hungry T-rex, but discovers her way back to the current day being painted over.
ReplyDeleteI would be suprised if this story Didn't inspire that TV tale.
Thanks for all the tales Karswell!
When I was thirteen, I used to take my two dollar weekly allowance and buy as many comics as that would afford. I was partial to the DC horror, "House of Secrets," "House of Mystery," et al; but would purchase the Marvel reprints with the remainder. I usually liked the stories, but found the art at the time "dated." I'll take these gems over the crap that's out there today!
