Murder Will Out! / Terror in the Tropics
Whatever it was the Atlas bullpen had against blondes back in the pre-code days we'll never know, but one thing is for certain-- it's totally time for another long awaited / request filled THOIA Atlas Fest! And this time we pose this simple, themed question: "Do blondes really have more fun?" (ANSWER: Definitely not this week!) Our first traumatizin' tale is from the July '53 issue of Uncanny Tales #10, while the second is another warm-hearted charmer from the Feb '53 issue of Suspense #27.

About the first story: in the first panel, is that supposed to be a spider or a crab on the lady's shoulder? Later on, whoever drew the "sea leech" either wanted to have the "leech" taken somewhay figuratively, (like "sea lice") ;or had never seen a leech before; (thing looked like a snake of some kind! Didn't this guy ever go swimming or wading in a lake or river before?)

ReplyDeleteHey, that last story was awesome looking. I loved the extreme "eighties horror movie" colored gel lighting and all the super dynamic closeups. This extreme POV happening here, coupled with the strangely depthless woodcut-like thick-line brush style, made it feel really edgy in parts, like a punk zine collage. This is probably my pick for neatest pre-code art in quite a while.
I like when you guys get nit picky about the monsters in these stories... let's see, it's about a girl that shape shifts into a sea leech or whatever it is (like it matters.) But no, for some reason we require more accurate knowledge and reference from the artist who was probably just as confused as we are when he was handed the original script. Come on peeps, let's not sweat the details, these stories are entertainment, there's more to like here than not like.

ReplyDeleteI loved the claustrophobic atmosphere of the second tale. You can almost hear the flies buzzing, trying to get in through the screens.
