This is our last gory glimpse into The Weird World of Eerie Publications (for now), but of course there's always more at Mykal's amazing Bloody Pulp and don't forget about THE ESSENTIAL book on all things Eerie Pub by Mike Howlett in stores NOW! Our story today from the April 1966 issue of Weird Vol. 1 #11 originally came to life as "Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Werewolf" in Fantastic Fears #8 from 1953 (you can thank either Burgos or Fass for removing the artist name at the bottom of the splash page), while the great Bob Powell signed his name on the gorgeous cover.
Bonus Filler!
Nobody tells stories like those old crones!
ReplyDeleteWell, the humor seemed a little desperate here and there, but the Elmer Fudd allusion and the "sheep's clothing" gag actually made me laugh out loud. This was a pretty weird monkey-like werewolf, too.
ReplyDeleteThis is the only time this was printed "straight-up"... the next time had a lovely Ezra Jackson decap splash and a new title!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the month-ending plug posts! You rule Earth, you do!
I liked this one, corny humor and all! I thought "your old crony, the old crone" was clever. The line about the hunter being "hard up the path" was too true, I think. I might have missed the wolf in sheep's clothing reference if Mr. Cavin had not mentioned it.
ReplyDeleteOh BTW, Karswell, my scan of Fantastic Fears #8 also has the artist credit box whited out, or never filled in. Folks can check it out with the nifty preview feature at the Digital Comics Museum if they don't want to download it. You don't even have to sign in!
