If your part of the world is as sweltering hot as my part of the world currently is, then a trip to some fearful frozen tundra is just what The Devil ordered. It's one more story this month from spotlight Standard Comics artist Rocco Mastroserio, and it's not only our last tale of July 2010, but also our last tale from the June 1953 issue of Adventures into Darkness #10. See you in Arghgust, Fright Freaks!
Karswell: I really like (and discovering here) Mastroserio's art from this period. You can see the same artist at work from the later Charlton stuff - but this is (obviously) darker, far more claustrophobic and dense. At Charlton, he was often going for a more heroic tone, I think.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and thanks for putting a chill in my day with this arctic setting. In South Florida, it's hotter that hell with now.
It's freezing in San Francisco right now. I kind of miss warm weather but maybe I'm better off not melting away like y'all.
ReplyDeleteThe ending to this tale was quick and cheap. I want my money back!
The artwork was great, though. Thanks for sharing, as always Karswell. I can never get enough of pre code horror.
I LOVE WHEN YOU POST A FULL ISSUE....... CHEAP ASS LIKE ME REALLY APPRECIATES IT!! THANKS
ReplyDeleteGotta love that abrupt ending. When I was a kid, a friend of mine told me some apocryphal story that seemed to get up a good head of steam, and then all of a sudden "...as he ran away, he tripped and broke his neck." The end.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if his Dad wrote the script for this one?
Was there ever a pre-code prospectors' story that didn't have one get greedy and murder the others?
ReplyDeleteAlferd Packer went one better and ate the others.
ReplyDelete>In South Florida, it's hotter that hell with now.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Florida for most of 1987 Mykal, (and I was a roofer too!) so I know EXACTLY what you mean.
>I can never get enough of pre code horror.
Glad to hear it Doomed!
>CHEAP ASS LIKE ME REALLY APPRECIATES IT!!
Well, from one cheap ass to another--- you're welcome! More full issues likely for August too, I'm still digging around to see what is worthy.
>Gotta love that abrupt ending.
It's my favorite part of this story too... abrupt endings either rule or fail, pretty sure this one rules.
>Was there ever a pre-code prospectors' story that didn't have one get greedy and murder the others?
Never... thankfully.
>Alferd Packer went one better and ate the others.
Haha, yeah he really packed it all in. Thanks for the comments, and get ready to get your head seriously packed with some Harvey Horror... it's coming up next!
Karswell: I roofer! Here in Florida? Lord have mercy. I stood on a roof once in August a couple of years back (briefly - trying to get a girlfriend's cat down). It felt like I was standing on a tar-covered frying pan. I could feel the bottoms of my shoes getting hot, and the air was all wavey in front of my eyes. I grabbed the damn cat and got off and felt the air cool immediately (to a nice, livable 98 degrees). It was like jumping off the surface of the sun. God bless you for your service. How did you ever get enough liquids inside you?
