So who's ready for the last story from the November 1953 issue of
Strange Mysteries #14? And who's also ready for a heaping helping of fear, greed, hate-- all mixed in one revolting, um... salad of despair?! Don't laugh, that's what the intro says! Okay, go ahead and laugh anyway, because the only thing more ridiculous than that is the actual story itself.
Some of you already know about the upcoming pre-code collection from
Fantagraphics called
Four Color Fear: Forgotten Horror Comics of the 50's... but click
HERE for more details, as well as additional info about 6 other great Golden Age collections on the horizon too, featuring books about
Alex Toth, Jack Cole, Basil Wolverton, Dick Briefer and more!
Great Scan, hope you're well again.
ReplyDeleteI, too, feel occasionally like an aged receptacle for hate.

ReplyDeleteSo many great things here... there's the big skeleton on the splash page that seems to be saying "G-A-A-A-Y!" And the way frustrated Sarah is peeking at Abner, while he smirks at her peeking. And his goofy-looking ghost! Another good selection!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing as jpmorgan as I read this because I've never seen such a limp wrist in specter before! But I don't think he was too goofy; there were a couple of panels where he's pretty creepy. But then things started getting silly as he visited the police station and became a character appearing too much.
ReplyDeleteGreat issue, Karswell. And your intro on this one was hilarious as well!
I'll take the salad of despair as appetizer and for the main course, I'll have the spare ribs of doom with some French fries of terror. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThere wasn't one story in this whole issue that wasn't totally, utterly insane, but this one took the cake! Never before have I had to laugh so hard while reading a horror comic.
INDEED THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST FULL ISSUES YOU HAVE POSTED, FUN STORYS, COOL ART AND EVERYTHING OVER THE TOP! THANKS AGAIN KARS!!
ReplyDeleteWell that's dumb. Which bullets would he have used if he had really killed himself? And any barrel rifling would have scratched out whatever Abe had engraved on the bullet anyway. Plus, if she'd shot him in any bone, say his chest or head, then the mushrooming ballistics would have... ah, screw it.
ReplyDeleteNice weather we've been having lately. Ever notice how, when someone is hanged in these comics, you can always see the shadow? I'd like to see a nice collage of gallows shadows.
So yeah, I forgot to mention that the Despair Salad was also chock full of gay skeletons, goofy ghosts, improbable ballistics, gallows shadows, annnnnd, weird, now I'm hungry for ribs!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you enjoyed this full issue presentation, I'll try to do one at least every month... I know you completists like to hear that. And you Atlas fans will be pleased to hear that coming up next I have a double header from Mystery Tales. Don't move a muscle of despair!
Very good silly story today, and thank you for the news about the Fantagraphics books. i will definitely be purchasing all of them.
ReplyDeleteI love the screams and exclamations and wailings. From now on I'm going to shout AWWWHHOOOOOO whenever I start to speak.
ReplyDeleteNext time I want to frame someone for murder, I'll use specially engraved bullets! Awesome!
