Here's a super creepy Vic Carrabotta classic from the May 1952 issue of Astonishing #13. This issue is one of my absolute favorite pre-code comics in my entire Golden Age collection, and features many great stories by some of the best that Atlas had to offer: Ogden Whitney, Cal Massey (who we featured in our last post), and the incredible Bernie Krigstein (who we plan to feature next!)
If you haven't already, click HERE to see the other 3 stories I've posted from this issue... but not until you've read-- The House on the Hill!
I could see where this was going, but Carrabotta has a real knack for raising the tension to uncomfortable levels.
ReplyDeleteThe panel where Langley tries to sleep with the menacing clown painting looming overhead reminds me of a similar scene in the THE SIMPSONS that became a minor internet meme: 'Can't sleep...clown will eat me'.
He should have known better than to accept an offer of a lecture date on Friday the 13th!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I ever told this urban legend, but it is said that if you go to Red Rocks Amphitheater on Friday the 13th at midnight, and sit in the 13th row in the 13th seat, Molly the Hatchet Lady will come and steal your head. A friend and I were going to try it one time, but I scared her by telling her about the dream I had about a demon waiting at the end of the tunnel leading up to the Amphitheater. We never thought to try it again after that.
Great story. Even though the most frightening thing I could imagine encountering in ampitheatre is the ghost of Beef from PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.
ReplyDelete"What do you think of the human mind?" There's a question, huh? Kinda along the lines of "How does your tongue taste?" or "What do your eyes look like?"
ReplyDeleteWhat a strange drawing style this guy's got! Amateurish but with a weird power that makes it look like he had a few screws loose -- which really makes this story worth reading.
ReplyDeleteI read your blog everyday. Keep up the good fun!
WEIRD THIS DOESN'T LOOK LIKE CARRABBOTA STYLE TO ME BUT THERES HIS NAME ON IT........... COOL STORY LIKE HORROR PARIAH SAYS IT WAS KIND OF PREDICTABLE BUT IN A FUN WAY. LOVE ALL THE SPOOKY DETAIL AND THE SCRATCHY STYLE DOES CREATE A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE.
ReplyDeleteI REMEMBER THE OTHER STORIES FROM THIS ASTONISHING WHEN YOU POSTED THEM BEFORE, A GREAT ISSUE!!!!!
He's a genius, but he goes along with the same guy he was running away from. I guess it's scary enough it doesn't have to make sense.
ReplyDeleteGood story Lily... even more nightmarish for me would be if on Friday the 13th I were at Red Rocks Amphitheater and sitting in the 13th seat in the 13th row waiting to see Slayer, but then suddenly Nickleback came on instead. AIEEEE!!!
ReplyDeleteFun comments on this one, thanks to everyone for stopping by (still wondering where some of you disappeared to though...) and nice to see some new commentors too Trevor, hope you come back.
As promised, Krigstein is up next!
i'd comment more often but sometimes i feel like i don't have anything to bring to the table...
ReplyDeletethe artwork on this one was really odd, though- disconcerting.
"...still wondering where some of you disappeared to though..."
ReplyDeleteI, for one, am on vacation in Bangkok, and will have a good time catching up later this week. All Atlas month, hey? I always schedule these once-in-a-lifetime holidays at inconvenient onces.
