Continuing along with our look at Prize Publications Black Magic series, we begin today with one of my favorite witchcraft tales from the July 1952 issue of Black Magic Vol. 2 #8. Featuring crisp art from the unique and underrated hand of Bill Walton. [Sadly, "Birth After Death" had to be removed over an IP dispute. -- Nequam]
The scariest of Poe's stories by far was the one about being buried alive. Gives me chills thinking about it. Not that this is a Poe story of course, but that's a pretty primal fear. I'm so claustrophobic that I don't even like to take elevators. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteSorry to say that I was one of the people who underrated Bill Walton, but no more! Some beautiful work in "Witch Girl." The story is fairly well written, too, barring a few editorial miscues (Page 5, Panel Two, for instance -- that first balloon should be in thought -- or better yet, in a caption). Even the abrupt ending didn't bother me. Very nice. Thanks, Kars.
ReplyDeleteAnd all I have to say about "Birth After Death" is, where were malpractice suits when you needed them?
For two guys to whom the world should be so grateful, they sure did receive a thankless reward by getting shot in the back! Ouch! I love the Simon/Kirby stories in this series. The first story was cool as well. I'm surprised she couldn't see her own death coming, though.
ReplyDeleteThanks as always for the great stories, Karswell.

ReplyDeleteMaybe it's as with most people, who can spot faults in others, but never in themselves. Most people besides me, I mean.
"you're a Witch Girl/and you've gone too far/but you know it don't matter anyway/you can't rely on the Conjure Man, honey/you can't rely on the Conjure Man, honey..."
ReplyDeleteHall & Oates could see the Devil...
i'd heard that story about Sir Walter Scott but is it TWUE?...
>i'd heard that story about Sir Walter Scott but is it TWUE?...
ReplyDeleteApparently it is... it's not uncommon for the time for people to be accidently buried alive. Hell, it even happens still today (I'm not speaking from experience of course though!)
Ok, one more day of Black Magic to go and then we'll wrap up the month with some Ace classics, another Atlas request, and maybe even a Silver Age Horror Flash Forward! Don't touch that dial...
bill walton is great and this is a super example of his work! actually think it's better than the kirby story too..dont shoot me!
ReplyDeleteJust to show some support to a fellow Anon, yeah, I like the Walton story better, too.

ReplyDeleteMe too!
